    Ring Around the Rosie

"Ring around the rosie, A pocket full of posies, Ashes, ashes, We all fall down!" Here's a little scene I completed tonight. Looks like little Leon is trying to tell his mother something important about his diaper, while his sisters are busy swinging each other around. The...

Here's a pic showing some lighting I installed in the coke ovens of the industrial area that I'm working on.

    Locomotive Service Building

Here's some pics of a locomotive service building that I recently completed, using the Walthers Backshop kit. I built it as a flat instead of as a regular "box" building, leaving the back open. I plan to place it along the edge of the peninsula on my layout in the industrial area, so that I...

Late night on the loading dock

I was walking home tonight and happened to cut through the rail yard and saw the loading dock foreman, Mike, giving the night's work orders to Walt and TJ. Looks like Tom called in sick, so they're going to have their hands full getting all those boxcars unloaded before the morning shift...

When your trains get a little kinky

We've had some pretty cold temperatures here the last few days, and my basement has gotten down in to the 50's. Apparently it's enough to cause the benchwork to contract somewhat and here's the results (see below). Obviously, I'm going to be spending some time the next few days cutting in some...

    Roadside Lunch Stand

Here's a little diorama I just finished of a roadside lunch stand. It's a Bar Mills laser cut wood kit called Swanson's Lunch Stand. Like all the Bar Mills kits, this one went together very nicely, no problems. After construction of the kit, I built the diorama on a piece of 8" x 10" masonite.

    My first wooden structure kit

I finished my first wooden structure kit tonight (see pic below). It's the first time I ever worked with wood kits, so was a real learning exercise. The guys over at the Railroad-Line forum were kind enough to answer my questions, always with a cheerful and helpful reply, on working with wood...

    Finally finished by bridge project

Finally finished my bridge project At least the construction portion of it anyway. Just need to install it on the layout now. It's made from 3 of the Walthers double-track through truss bridges, with 2 of the Micro-Engineering steel viaduct towers. The ME towers are nice looking when...

Branson Scenic Railway - pics of a GREAT time!

We spent the week at Branson, Missouri this week, and one of the highlights of the trip was taking a 2-hour ride on the excursion train provided by the Branson Scenic Railway (BSRX). So, here’s a little narrative of the trip along with some photos. The entire consist was made up I believe of...

Latest weathering project car (pics inside)

I've been trying some more weathering techniques, and on this one I was going for a severely oxidized look, as well as the rust and grime. I used a base wash of diluted acrylic (burnt sienna) first, to get rid of the sheen and give the following applications some "tooth" to hang on to...

MoPac Short Bay Window Caboose project

Below is a pic of a project I finished up tonight, which is a kitbash of a Missouri Pacific Short Bay Window Caboose. I used the Walthers Bay Window Caboose kit as a starting point. I chopped out a section of the roof and rejoined the ends, and cut out the walls and made new walls from...

    More Freight Car Weathering

I've been experimenting some more with some weathering on cheap freight cars (like the previous pics, I'll probably toss most of these on eBay since most of them are not really my lines or period...just looking for cheap $5 cars to experiment on. So don't ask me what that B&O line car is...

Need help identifying this car type...

Can anyone tell me what this boxcar would be called: I found it on the MOPAC website and the details are thus: From/To: 786200-786399 DESIG: RBL CPY: 70 IL: 51'5" Doors: 10' PL CUFT 4543 LTWT: 74500 BLT: 68 I'm guessing that it's a 51'5" single plug door, but what does...

    Some weathering and graffiti

Here's some cars I was experimenting on today with weathering techniques and some graffiti. I found these MDC Roundhouse cars cheap at my LHS, so thought I would work on them and see what I could do. They're too late for my time period (1960's) and I'm not a big fan of graffiti, so I'll...

    pics of new warehouse

Here's some pics of the recently completed warehouse I just finished up for the layout. It's the Walthers REA (Railway Express Agency) structure which I made as a flat, using the back wall as another front wall to make the structure appear twice as big. Then used sheet styrene to fill out the...

    Layout Progress

It's the end of the year, so a good time to take stock in where we're at. Here's some updated photos of my layout that I took today. I plan to have some light manufacturing (Owosso Furniture Manufacturing) on the end of the peninsula between the two sets of tracks (opposite the engine...

    Anyone ever used www.wholesaletrains.com ?

Anyone here ever used www.wholesaletrains.com ? I came across them tonight while surfing around and they seem to have some really low prices on things. For instance, I noticed their Atlas #6 Custom Line turnouts are like $6.89 - the cheapest I've ever seen these online has been about $7.50 at...

    Warehouse

Here's a couple of pics of the warehouse I recently completed to add to my industrial section of my layout. It is the Walthers refrigeration kit, but I built it as a flat with a false back to make it appear twice as big as the normal kit. I added sheet styrene to make up the extra 1/2 roof...
