It has begun! The re-homing of the Discovery!
The great unpacking........! Space-Cat approves!
The display case has withstood all the transportation anomalies unscathed, I am pleased to say!
I have assembled the case and placed it temporarily atop the dressoir. The next step, is to build a supporting structure, to place the display case up against the ceiling. The structure will be open-plan, with maybe a couple of shelves. That way, I will still have unrestricted light to the rest of the room, from the windows behind.
As we say in Dutch: Wordt vervolgd.....

It seems that the neck of the Discovery didn't agree with the transportation....
The weight of the command module pushing down on the neck for over a year, has caused one of the rings in the neck to buckle.
It can be pulled back relatively easily, whoever, it pops back to the buckled position.
I am going to dampen the affected ring/s with water and hang the model from the neck and hopefully, when dry, all will be back to normal.....
I'll keep you posted......

If you let it hang upside down, with the Ball on the bottom, maybe a little weight on it, so that it holds, you may be able to paint with a fine brush, some liquid Crazy Glue in that area to give it strength. It will probably have to be supported in the future. It's great you posted this. Future builders will know that section needs to be built up for long term support.

Current state of affairs.....
(The vacuum cleaner hose is not touching.. It's just a fail-safe to stop the ball plummeting 1,5m to the ground, if something lets go... 
)
The internal support structure of the model is designed to hold everything firm in the horizontal plane.
The model was (unfortunatly) boxed and stored vertically and, I think, that all the vibrations and banging around of transport helped compress the neck ring part/s because of the weight of the ball. .... It slid down the rod, so to speak......!
I'll let things dry overnight and see how it turns out.

I have designed a stand for the display case of the Discovery.
The display case itself is a little on the heavy side, so I want to make sure that the case is firmly supported.
In my old house, I had the case mounted directly to the wall. However, in my new place I do not trust the walls to take the weight.....
I am also limited for space. So, for those reasons, I will not be mounting it on the wall this time.
As can be seen in the earlier photos, the display case is standing on a dressoir. I want to raise the case to ceiling height above the dressoir, so I designed a stand for it....
The two pieces of glass in the middle are left over glass shelves from another display case I have. Waste not, want not.....
I added some downlights too.
If all goes well, this is how it should look when finished...... Hopefully I can start assembly of it this coming weekend.

If it was shipped vertically that meant all the compression/tension forces when right through the whole model. It makes sense then if the Ball section didn't have it's own support something would happen. Shipping can be so brutal on models, when I moved, after being in the same place for 23 years, I lost a lot of models I though I packed well, but the moving trucks suspension was so hard, when I opened the boxes, many were bent up, or on the plastic ones, spoke wheels broken, fenders sheered off, cockpit glass pushed inside the model, it became a junkyard of sorts. My Tamiya CB750 Racing 1/6th scale (huge model) took the worst beating. I couldn't put it back together to my satisfaction and gave it away. A box smashed it. ( was more of a dope back then than now). At least you'll get this beauty back.
After hanging suspended overnight to dry, the fix on the neck seemed to of worked well enough. It is not quite right yet, but the worst of the kinking has gone.
There are a few spots that need a little more water and gentle persuasion, but that can wait until it is suspended horizontally, and the load stresses are as designed.
I decided to do a control check of all the parts of Discovery..........
As I already knew, the engine section received no damage....
The only section not yet unpacked was the spine......
When I packed it, used two thick walled cardboard tubes. I plugged each end of the smaller tube with 10mm foam board, with a hole in the center to accommodate the spine tube. Each end of the spine tube was then suspended in the cardboard tube by the foam plugs.
The smaller tube was then inserted into a larger diameter tube. As it turned out, the molding inside the end caps of the larger tube fitted perfectly over the outer diameter of the smaller tube. Bonus! thumbsup
So, a tube inside a tube inside a tube! (Edit: I get the feeling RF will start posting Mike Oldfield songs in response to that...
)
And, the spine is completely undamaged!
More progress soon.....
