Maybe you could adapt it so you could use a pin as an axis of rotation and when you wanted to replace the canopy, you take the pin out and switch out the canopy parts.Too flimsy!
I haven't seen any pics with the canopy open that I remember. Which way would it open?
I'm not sure either, but if it was my vehicle the canopy would open the way it does on a traditional Viper.

I too think it slides forward. There is something like a guide rail on top of the nose. I did not bother too much about that because the project called for a "toy". However, as you might have guessed, I'm not so good at creating "toys", so the car became a little more complex. Basically only the canopy and the rear wheels remotely refer to the toy concept... Ah well, blame that to @Rhaven Blaack , he is constantly pushing me so I don't even try any more to hold me back when it is about "toys"..! 
So I should modify the canopy by removing the back wall, and set it at the forward end of the "rails"?
I love the Mk I, but my fav battlestar is the reimagined ad in NewBSG
I cut out the back wall of the canopy section.
Now on to the wings and rear fuselage.
I got the wings and fin, parts 6, 9, and 10 cut out and preformed.
Slow going here, between babysitting, and pain in the hands, I may get 30 minutes a day working on this... I'll be so glad when I get back home.
