The Tripods which firstly was a series of three books by writer Christopher penfold in 1968. With a prequel which followed much later.
Those books being as follows:-
The White Mountains (1967)
The City of Gold and Lead (1968)
The Pool of Fire (1968)
When the Tripods Came (1988), the prequel to the first three books.
Come 1984 - the BBC commissioned a tv adaptation of the books and the first two books made it into production, sadly however the third and final chapter was cancelled, leaving millions of viewers with never knowing the fate of our heroes... only those who had read the literature knew what happened to mankind.
The so-called bad guys were the Tripods, and the model I'm presenting here was the design used in the tv series.
Always wanting a model of the this wonderful machine, luck presented itself just after I had showed my partner the tv series. I did a search and a group calling itself the Tripods society "The League of Freemen" on Facebook. There I found an old Zealot member whom had made one available as a kit.
Unfortunately before I found him, another company had made available a poor filament copy of the makers design which I had purchased that thinking it was the only one.
Luckily after getting to know the original kit maker, two newer and better detailed resin prints were acquired and construction began...
I'll post here the construction of all three, so that you can see what effort went into the models.
With all the parts laid out - we have two std Tripods and one gun toting (laser doo-dad) variant.
The two on the left are the resin ones, and the other the filament version.

Construction began with filament Tripod, which had the legs as two pieces

Legs clamped it was time for the head, also split into two pieces.

The centre split will cause a few headaches in the sanding and filling department.

The front lined up, but the back of the head was a different matter.

Torso and leg stubs required minimal prep.

As for that poor join on the back of the head, I soaked the part into very hot water for around 10-15 seconds and made the part close back together.
I couldn't get any clamps on this part so the mark one human hand had to do.

Sub-assembly of the first construction now complete.

More of the build tomorrow...
