The Tripods which firstly was a series of three books by writer Christopher penfold in 1968. With a prequel which followed much later.

Those books being as follows:-

The White Mountains (1967)
The City of Gold and Lead (1968)
The Pool of Fire (1968)
When the Tripods Came (1988), the prequel to the first three books.

Come 1984 - the BBC commissioned a tv adaptation of the books and the first two books made it into production, sadly however the third and final chapter was cancelled, leaving millions of viewers with never knowing the fate of our heroes... only those who had read the literature knew what happened to mankind.

The so-called bad guys were the Tripods, and the model I'm presenting here was the design used in the tv series.

Always wanting a model of the this wonderful machine, luck presented itself just after I had showed my partner the tv series. I did a search and a group calling itself the Tripods society "The League of Freemen" on Facebook. There I found an old Zealot member whom had made one available as a kit.

Unfortunately before I found him, another company had made available a poor filament copy of the makers design which I had purchased that thinking it was the only one.

Luckily after getting to know the original kit maker, two newer and better detailed resin prints were acquired and construction began...

I'll post here the construction of all three, so that you can see what effort went into the models.

With all the parts laid out - we have two std Tripods and one gun toting (laser doo-dad) variant.
The two on the left are the resin ones, and the other the filament version.

Construction began with filament Tripod, which had the legs as two pieces
20241021_103133.jpg

Legs clamped it was time for the head, also split into two pieces.

20241021_103939.jpg

The centre split will cause a few headaches in the sanding and filling department.

20241021_104622.jpg

The front lined up, but the back of the head was a different matter.

20241021_104639.jpg

Torso and leg stubs required minimal prep.

20241021_105704.jpg

As for that poor join on the back of the head, I soaked the part into very hot water for around 10-15 seconds and made the part close back together.
I couldn't get any clamps on this part so the mark one human hand had to do.

Sub-assembly of the first construction now complete.

More of the build tomorrow...

I have a lot of thick rubber bands for pressure when nothing else will do. You can spread them out evenly, and your hand doesn't get tired. I have some really fat ones from shipping crates. I was so bummed when the BBC did not finish the trilogy. It did really leave so many people hanging for a proper end. A couple of YouTube links. Watch all episodes free at TheTripodsOnline.com.

Unfortunately your videos are ironically copyrighted in my country where I have a tv license!!! Glad I have the dvds...

I do have industrial sized elastic bands, but this was super glue and I only had to hold it for 30 seconds.

Chuffy, do you have a VPN installed? You may be able to watch it with one. I can watch anything from any country with the one I have. VPN = Virtual Private Network. It makes your I.S.P. invisible, and stores no information, it's just a gateway, and anyplace you're visiting cannot be traced back to you. If you have "sign ins" for websites, they may not work, as the sites (some cannot verify your I.S.P), or they might go through that make you prove you aren't a robot captcha. YouTube does not have that feature.

nah, can't be bothered with all that interwebbage nonsense, and when I have it on the shelf already, there's no need ;)

YES! YES! YES! AWESOME SHOW - if you haven't seen it, WATCH IT!!! Creepy premise, it's like an inofficial sequel to "War of the Worlds". The City of Gold and the organic Tripods (the Masters) glued me to the screen. Their appearance made me write my very first letter to the network which was showing the programme and I added a pencil drawing of the monsters. Since I did not have a VCR back then I drew it from my memory, it came out exactly as intended.

This was the first science fiction show I watched after BSG and Buck ended, a few years before TNG premiered and I recorded the theme from TV on cassette to keep at least something from it. The show was INSANELY expensive for a kid's show, I think one episode cost twice or three times as much as one Doctor Who episode, but it was produced at the wrong time. It fell victim to one of the biggest cost cutting campaign in the history of the BBC. The new BBC directors did not see any value in supporting two scifi shows at the same time, so the showrunners were left with one choice: keep the Tripods or keep the Doctor. The Doctor won but even he faced MASSIVE cuts. As a result the final third season of the Tripods was scrapped even though cast and crew were more than ready to conclude the story. In hindsight this was one of the most disappointing decisions the network had ever made (another was the re-use of the old magnetic tapes which stored the first episodes of the Doctor and the Avengers) and quite a few people regretted that.

Ken Freeman's unforgettable theme:

Unfortunately there are no paper models of the war machines (YET!) but they are on my list. :)

PART 2 of the Tripod builds.

Moving on from the filamented Tripod, it was time to move onto preparing the resin parts, which still had a little clean up needed, tiny support nubs here and there.

20241021_120101.jpg

A few underneath to take care of too.

20241021_120252.jpg

The leg tolerances on the legs joins were incredibly tight, and sadly I snapped a little piece out, no probs, but I did swear!

20241021_141000.jpg

Filler applied where needed.

20241021_155658.jpg

The differences between the filament print vs the resin.

The leg quality between the two.

20241024_110725.jpg20241024_110744.jpg

All resin parts sorted.

20241021_155707.jpg

Just in case there was any residue left on the parts, everything was given a good scrub with warm water and a tiny amount of washing up liquid.

Parts drying

20241023_204039.jpg

For spray painting I built myself a collapsible booth out of old bits of plywood - can't really spray indoors, so out onto the balcony with it!

20241024_110925.jpg

Filament print first, and I used this automotive spray putty. Bit of a test bed for me this one, so we'll see how it works.
Kind of halfway between a filler/primer.

20241024_111132.jpg

Despite having nearly the whole tin on all the parts, four coats wasn't going to be enough. More substantial filler would need to be applied.

20241024_121958.jpg

Resin parts were next into the booth, for which I used Tamiya fine surface primer. I've been told putting your can in very warm, not hot water, will improve the flow.
Its getting cold in England, so I thought I'd give it a try...

20241026_102424.jpg

All three were back on the bench for a look over and to see what got missed and what I needed to do next.

More of the build tomorrow...

The Resistance managed to "snap off" a leg once, so you are in good company. ;)

The booth looks awesome. This is something I'll need to make for myself. My previous airbrushing attempts took place in an empty shoebox without lid. I constantly have issues with dust settling on fresh painted parts. Outside is even worse because of the dust from the nearby traffic.

The difference between the two materials show but I am sure some sanding and the first layer of primer will take care of it. Just wear a mask while sanding, wet sanding is better, too.

What is interesting to note is that all heads are asymmetrical. Both sides feature different details. Yesterday I found a model of the squatting miniature used in the show:

It too has asymmetrical panels. I haven't noticed that before. :)

One for me, one for the resistance!

There were a lot of flying spiders about that day, the parts came back indoors 'webbed' - I do have a airbrush, but its early days for me to get a good spray at low pressure indoors.

Yes, they may look symmetrical, but not as you rightly say all have small differences.

There were some of the originals out for display a few weekends ago, I have included them here for you which some fans took.

No red one... at the moment, whilst it still exists, it now a Police matter due to it being involved in a theft of props from a collector recently.

Part three of the Tripods build.

Silver Tripod on the right was not being painted silver, but Rub n Buffed instead - had good results on Twiki, and as the Tripods were not a shiny silver I thought this would look just right.
The other Tripod was to be red, so I have given the those parts a pink undercoat, which should give a better red topcoat.

20241027_161039.jpg

Three coats of metallic red, which in this pic looks very vibrant.

20241028_120315.jpg

Under my harsh work-light looks very orange. Although vibrant and completely the wrong colour, it did look better to the natural eye.

20241028_120511.jpg

Some small details being picked out on the belly/torso sections and the feet.

20241029_202525.jpg

Leg in their finished state ready for some weathering.

20241029_202546.jpg

I decided to put magnets into the guns, I just know I was possibly going to catch them sending the model flying, so I made them kind of break away.

20241031_114736.jpg20241031_201300.jpg

In the tv series the slot around the headpiece was illuminated at certain times.
The kit maker supplies a piece of filament strip to replicate this, but I didn't think it was up to much.
I found some packing strip, the kind which goes around heavy parcels and has a interesting texture to it.

20241031_121859.jpg

Two small strips were then cut - one painted green and the other yellow.

20241031_132313.jpg

Legs were to assembled with the short stubs put into the torso first

20241031_131455.jpg

Then when you need three arm to hold everything - I looked downwards to try and get everything glued - super glue really grabbed the resin quickly, so it was very easy to hold two legs, then glue one after the other within a minute.

20241031_131743.jpg

Thankfully the feet and legs all just about fitted onto the base.

20241031_131820.jpg

Tomorrow the final reveal

The base is a natural choice. To all who don't know it, this is a rendering of the mind-control plate which is implanted into the top of the head of the humans by the tripods to suppress free will and creativity.

Pure eye candy, especially the red one (pun intended; the idea of a tripod lolly is not too far fetched since it already comes on a stick - three sticks, to be exact, but the head is big enough for that, too! ).
