I use SketchUp 6 & 8 and sometimes SketchUp Make 2017 (the final free desktop version) in combination with CorelDraw12, Gimp, InkScape and Pepakura. Each program has its pros and cons. I suggest to check out a few and choose the one you prefer.
wow i remember coreldraw from back in the day. Ive dabbled with adobe photoshop before, but it seems that the newer software works alot better and is more user friendly.

As mentiond I'm working on UHU's template


If you want to design your own Tie variants please let me know maybe we can do things together. The list of Tie variants is long. And the defender is on my list as well.
i do have an idea for a tie variant, ive done some line art so far. Its a very customisable design, the tie fighter - the variant i have in mind has the interceptor as a basis but is much more than that :biggrin:

I've seen people make fantastic models with a ruler, and right angle triangle, and compass with pencil and string. Once they got the parts right, they scanned them and made the models from the scans. When I was young, and computers were not available for the masses, I learned how to loft hulls with string and a square and French Curve set.

i think thats how most of us start out tbh, and possibly some of the best models made have been from 'scratch' with 'to hand' materials and imagination - i dont think we would have half of the classic scifi/fantasy/modern movie vessels without it. Ive always used the 'pen/paper/ruler' combo to make my terrain etc before, so software is a whole new thing for me.

Nice drawing. Its the fuslage from the striker? And the wing is a nice setup. I have seen the wings somewhere before.

bit of a mixed bag really, influences from interceptor, bomber, striker etc, i thought of this version being a heavy anti armour/anti ship variant with specialised pinpoint lasers (or something along those lines) angled wings, long fuselage. cockpit body with a sidepod for target/power systems. Each wing would have one centrally mounted laser. The markings could be anything from classic greys to faction/character specific. Just an idea at the minute tho lol :noteeth:

so im currently playing around with inkscape etc but im also thinking about making a plain card 'mock up' and was just wondering whether there is any rule for scale? or is it just 'go with what you like'? :cool:

I guess you can build it your way. If you want to use scaling then there are standard scaling suzes.

i guess its more making sure the parts are in scale with each other lol - i think a tie variant that is all huge wings and teenie tiny cockpit would be a tad odd lol

The TIE Fighter (and also the Cylon Raider) has no real reference point to determine the scale. An X-Wing has the droid which can be used for measuring because we know how big the droid is. The only area which could be used is the cockpit interior. However we only know that one pilot fits inside who is able to look out of the front window. There are no fixed numbers of the size of the pilot's chair or how far it is away from the window. So the only way to determine the scale is guesstimating the dimensions as good as possible.

I like the idea of a plain mockup. There are many designers who build a white model which only has the linework on it first to see if the parts fit together and to check the final shape. I did the same when I was working on the Landram. You could mess around with it, correct proportions on-the-fly, cut it open, scan it and trace the changes to improve your template. I'm really looking forward to seeing your progress! :)

i think its more old habits tbh, im so used to doing things by pen & paper than digitally, itll take me a bit to get used to working with the software - so i thought if i made use of both, and i have a physical model to hand i can then refine it with the software etc.....lol theres sense in there somewhere :hammerhead:
