    ?? about bay window caboose's.

As per Wikipedia: Thought to have first been used by ACY in 1923, also closely associated with the B&O starting with a prototype in 1930. In the west, Western Pacific was the first to use 'em, in 1942. The rest of the railroads would've started using them later than that, obviously...

    ?? about bay window caboose's.

You're right of course, I forgot about that. In general, though, they wouldn't be seen on most mainlines after the mid-80's.

CODE 100 or CODE 83 TRACK

FWIW I'd also recommend C83. In fact, if I was to start over again, I'd go with C83 from the get-go. Now that I'm about 9/10 through the track I need, it's not really worth it. I might still do some of my industrial spurs in C83 or less though.

    ?? about bay window caboose's.

Introduction of bw cabooses would depend on individual railroads, and their need for new units. They would've been around until all cabooses were phased out, early to mid 80's for most railroads if I'm not mistaken.

    Kansas City Southern Grain Hoppers

You know, I think you guys are getting a lot of BS from these places. We have a hobby store north of the border. I think everyone knows Horizon has been working towards using only actual retail stores, that's no surprise. Most of the other large distributors are moving that way too...

    workbench help

What I do is make the plan, and then measure how far it is away from the wall. Once you cut out the subroadbed and put the centerline on it, then you can measure how far it should be from the wall, and wa-la.

    HO cold storage question.......

Hey Steve, not quite sure what you're looking for. I work in the poultry industry, and we have a cold storage facility within all of our plants, as well as using outside cold storage when necessary. From the outside there's very little difference between it and a normal warehouse. It's just...

    Road Signs

I have used styrene posts, and then signs printed onto cardstock. It looks pretty good; I think the styrene might be a little thick for the sign itself. I just attached the sign to the post with a dab of glue.

It's Monday 3-21-05, Weekend modeling accomplishments

Well . . . . . managed to get the mainline in (well, the subroadbed and roadbed anyways) behind the intermodal terminal; finished off the backdrop at same; and installed the first section of plywood for the terminal level. Oh, and the supports for the next section.

    Homosote or Cork ?

Can't compare the two myself, although I've thought about using homabed a few times. I use WS foam roadbed exclusively.

It's FRIDAY 3-11-05, weekend modeling plans!

Let's see, with any luck I'll have time to install the final lower level benchwork module, and install track through most of it. I'm sooooo close to running trains on the lower loop I can taste it !!!!!!

    My Farm Diorama

Wow that looks great. Matter of fact, I'll have to refer to those pics for inspiration. I'm gonna have a couple of farms on my 1980 layout, I think I'll use yours as a basis (but obviously modernize it).

    Ballast inside tunnels

I do not; however, I do ballast a few inches into the tunnel, so that it looks like I do.

    Helix Thoughts

Friday night I will begin construction of the benchwork for my helix. I am planning at least two tracks - one at 26", and one at 28.5". The mainline will climb 1.83 revolutions; there will also be a fully scenicked level above the helix; and there is a branchline below the mainline of the...

    Building Lighting

So here's my question of the week. The Wheat Kings & Pacific layout is coming along quite nicely, and I'm about to start placing buildings and wiring two additional buses (apart from track) - one for accessories, and one for night lighting. So here's finally the question - what's a good...

Well; let's see - got the entire left wall trackage finished, as well as the wiring. Cut out some subroadbed for the center peninsula. Ran some trains.

Huh - interesting. I typed my handle "rockislandmike" that I use only on train forums, and there's like four pages of hits on Google.

    Need help on Harbor

My train friend (with a 38' x 24' layout) is having a pair of Walthers ore docks, with two 6-foot ships. It's gonna look amazing. Not that that helps answers your question. But I just felt like chiming in.
