I was today years old when I learned that the Bridge of the original NCC-1701 does not face forward but is off the ship's axis by 36 deg. to the left (edit: sorry - to port). Mind Blown. Of course it makes sense when you consider that the turbo lift comes up through the center from the lower hull to the saucer section and is off the captains left shoulder. I just have never considered before. Of course, you all probably already knew this.

Regarding the bridge, I have noticed the turbolift position but I have never thought about it. I thought it was a perspective thing and never considered the specs because most sets were built to suffice the need for filming and did not necessarily represent the look on the miniature. Very interesting!

Up until filming began, the turbolift was behind the big chair, the first day of filming the director realized that the tubolift opening asnd closing would be a distraction on shots of the captain, so he had it moved off center.
The rotated bridge would explain why the shot in which the camera goes right through the top of the saucer looked so weird. I always thought it was due to the limitations of the vfx technology at that time. Instead, the 36° angle was in fact correct. Mind-blowing!
And the bridge finished. Thought to ponder, and maybe @RichRod can cast some light? Why do the Federation ships (excluding DS9 Defiant) have the bridge in such a prominent position? i.e.: easy target in a fight....

Drama, easy location for the camera to focus on, to navigate by sight if the sensors fail, maybe the bridge was designed to jettison from the hull in case of an emergency? Even the old Galactica had her bridge prominently exposed (and "Fire in Space" showed that this was not the smartest idea
). The new Galactica changed that and buried the CIC deep inside the ship. Or it was just a slip of the designer...

Valid points, but the other races don't have their bridges as such easy targets, and I think if the bridge was meant to "eject" we would have seen it?
Certainly no expert. I’ve sometimes wondered too at the reasoning for the bridge of so many Sci- Fi space ships being in a protruding fishbowl on the outer hull. I’d prefer that internal CIC on the New Galactica, or a TARDIS.
