Interestingly enough the TOS paper model is one of the sturdiest!

Up until filming began, the turbolift was behind the big chair, the first day of filming the director realized that the tubolift opening asnd closing would be a distraction on shots of the captain, so he had it moved off center.I was today years old when I learned that the Bridge of the original NCC-1701 does not face forward but is off the ship's axis by 36 deg. to the left (edit: sorry - to port). Mind Blown. Of course it makes sense when you consider that the turbo lift comes up through the center from the lower hull to the saucer section and is off the captains left shoulder. I just have never considered before. Of course, you all probably already knew this.

Drama, easy location for the camera to focus on, to navigate by sight if the sensors fail, maybe the bridge was designed to jettison from the hull in case of an emergency? Even the old Galactica had her bridge prominently exposed (and "Fire in Space" showed that this was not the smartest ideaAnd the bridge finished. Thought to ponder, and maybe @RichRod can cast some light? Why do the Federation ships (excluding DS9 Defiant) have the bridge in such a prominent position? i.e.: easy target in a fight....
