SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

Thanks so much to @zathros and @Revell-Fan for all the kind words, and to all the folks who've made such nice comments in all my builds. It's really nice to be part of something positive and fun in our "dark and gritty" world. This model has been a real challenge and I'm determined to finish her up right. Helping with my brother's new project (a 1965 Chevy Biscayne) has taken me away from the build desk, but I see the Hawk sitting there every day and I've got vacation time coming so she's going to see some love. My early New Year's resolution is to finish up some languishing builds (ST Phase II Oribital Office ) before starting the new ridiculously detailed projects in the pipeline. However, since @Revell-Fan said such nice things, I might have bring one of his incredible projects to the front. It feels like I've waited 500 years to start it! More to come, soon. Thanks @Rhaven Blaack . Glad to have you back on the boards. I'd be happy to post my redone parts if possible. This is based off JayBats original model and I sent him an email about sharing my work but have had no response. I redid a lot but figured I need to do that. Unless you higher-ups say it's okay then I'll share for sure. Real life has kept me away from the desk but I have vacation coming so I hope to get some more done. I'm in the slow, fiddly bits part.

@bgt01 With all of the work that you have done with reworking the parts, you have created a whole new model that is based on Jaybats model. So with that being said, I would say go ahead and (once you are finished) release the model (that you have created as a whole).
Like I said, I would love to add it to my collection.

I am glad that you were able to get Jaybats OK. Although, with the changes that you have made, you have completely designed a whole new model (using Jaybats model as a guide). You have done a PHENOMENAL JOB on this project!!!
I am looking forward to your model. I will be adding it to my list!

LOWER THRUSTER

More progress on the bottom of the Hawk. I scratch built the lower rear thruster on the bottom of the rear fuselage. I did the artwork in Illustrator, printed out the disc and glued it to 2mm chipboard. I edge-colored the chipboard with silver Sharpie. The four “legs” were cut out of scrap gray from earlier parts. They are trapezoid shaped with the wide ends attached to the disc. I made the legs a little tall, then trimmed them until the part fit right over the piping. I glued a second disc to 2mm chipboard and cut out the bottom of the thruster cylinders. I colored the edges silver. I cut 5mm strips of gray card stock and made the thruster cylinders.

LOWER FRAMEWORK

Here you see my high-tech styrene bending tools. The tea candles are cheap, and with the candle holder I’m using it makes a nice set distance between the candle and the styrene.

The lower framework is just 8 styrene rods bent at an angle. The neatness of the bend depends on how fast you bend it once the styrene softens. I’m still getting a handle on it and some rods had to be reheated and rebent. Six rods are at 90-degree angles. The two toward the front are at a steeper angle. I made all the rods longer than I needed, then used my X-acto to trim a little at a time until each fit like I wanted. A little Super Glue gel on each end and everything is locked in place. Looking at my reference photos of the big Hawk model, I think the rod I used is a little too thick. However, I can live with it.

I'll try to come up with some kind of paper equivalent for the mixed media parts, but I'm not a model designer so we'll see how well that turns out. I never expected this to turn into a "kit" so I didn't plan on anything like that, so I'll have to reverse-engineer some stuff. I do plan on providing the info for the mixed media parts I used.

STARBOARD GREEBLE

Inch by inch, progress is happening. I’d been avoiding this part because I wasn’t sure how to make it because it’s a complex piece on the studio model. Since my model is a much smaller scale, I decided to do what the real model builders would do and create a basic copy of the big part. The whole thing was done by looking at pics of the part and just cutting pieces of 2mm mounting board and 67 lb. white cover, adding card stock on edges and for detail.

To make sure this big part would fit in that tight space, I cut a piece of scrap card until it fit between the booster and fuselage. I glued the parts to this base and slid the whole thing in place.

Of all the work I’ve done on this model, this is by far my least favorite. It’s not a very detailed or accurate copy of the original part. I only have a few good pics of this area and even then gauging size and detail is a bit of guesswork. Couple that to my amateur skills and it’s only going to be so good. Luckily, this and the piece on the port side aren’t parts that get a lot of attention. Unfortunately, I’m going to run into more of this when I get to the greebles around the main engine.

As it stands, I take measurements of the scratch-built parts I do and some form of these will be included when I release my files of this kit.

I am a great believer in mixed media. Sometimes, it can really take the model to where it needs to be, and paper just doesn't cut it.
