I don't like the appearance of the X's, but for that very reason I say keep them. Unless you're a high end passenger run, trains aren't really meant to be pretty. (Those locos most of all!)
Of course, when the IC expieremented with electro-optical sensors and painted barcodes, they soon began to learn that it didn't work so well. It seems dirt and normal weathering give reflective markings a rather short useful life on the railroad. So if you really don't like them, I say paint out about half of them.
And I'm afraid I couldn't get an action shot of my switcher for you. After a long day of work, I had to put her in for some additional coal.
(hmm... still gotta do the chutes to coal on my mainline...)
