Orktober 2020 Special: Gunwagen (Patoroch)

Took a little vacation time this October...errr...Orktober to visit dr_tetrode. Of course, if I'm going to do so, I'd better bring out my papercraft supplies, and a special model that is Ork related. Since I'm waiting on parts from Mad Robot models for my Sentinel driver, this was perfect timing. I went through the Google Drive archives and my hard drive and found a Gunwagen that fits my purpose (Gorkamorka gaming in the future).

We setup in the garage and proceeded to build a bit. I was working on the Gunwagen, and dr_tetrode finally got to assembling some Space Wolves Space Marines following a guide proved by Zergei619.

Much tea and coffee were consumed, and plenty of papercraft began. I'm pretty thankful that when I started this hobby, most of my work involved me running up from my computer room to a dining room table to have room to work with papercraft in my small old house... I have a new house and bigger hobby area, but I left all my papercraft tool boxes and project boxes in tact for just papercraft. This made loading up all of that a snap to make that journey and have fun building in someone elses hobby space. I only needed to borrow a bit of dr_tetrode's glue!

So, while I'll be finishing this project alone at my home now that I am back, I certainly enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time building with another dedicated papercrafter (for as little as we did given the other family activities going on, like meals and trips to the local parks with kids).

Today's progress can be summed up with the completion of the powerplant section, and in particular the kustom exhaust pipes that are ready to belch pitch black smoke from the sekret xperimetal fuel the driver came up with (after too much fungus beer and fried squig). Crew compartment has walls now, and the boxes for the tracks are built and ready to greebly. I figure this main vehicle part with the cab and crew compartment will be my first sub-assembly with the track sections and wheels forming the other primary sub assemblies. This means they will likely remain apart until after painting, and there will be a pretty big final assembly process.

Big photo dumps here at the very end of Orktober! Started on the 17th, and here we are, moments away from the 31st! I didn't get as far as I wanted (painted), but I am further and faster than previous models as I right about finished with basic assembly and ready for a coat of primer depending on weather later tomorro....well, in a minute, today... Okay, as I type, it just turned midnight on the 31st. Officially, it is the last day of Orktober.

First dump is the assembly of the drive train components. Road wheels, idlers, and drive sprocket. Also, we have the front wheels, which are Orky octagonal shaped and iron shod, so the driver can run stuff over better. After all, Ork truks are there to get the boyz to the fight, and why apply breaks to slow down when you can run the enemy over and let the boyz hop out and get right into the fightn?!

So, here is a close up of the front wheels, and the current major assembly of the gunwagen. This is where I've stopped for the nigh...err... morning. I'm going to bed soon, and hopefully the weather will allow me to hit this with some primer today! If not, it is NOT a bad stopping point for my Orktoberfest '20 build. After all, I've built it in Orktober, who cars how long it takes me to paint it!20201030_234200.jpg20201030_222835.jpg

So, my 360 video made it first... But a few more steps obviously happened first. These were mostly documented on my phone, so not as easy to get online (on the forum at any rate). These chronical the last bits of the drive train assembly, and some of the pre-painting I did with black ink where the primer or paint might not quite get into when finishing.

Oh, yeah, and the last shot with the primer drying!

I magnetized a mount and a Big Shoota (orky auto cannon type gun). Not sure if its going to be optimal for table top without some blutac...
