Logging East Tennessee on the C&S RR

Meanwhile back at the Mill.

I thought I would get back on the photo tour of the C&S RR. The cameraman has returned to the Eastern side of the Kittom Mill #1 lumber complex.
Here we see a FSM model of a steam powered sawmill turning logs into lumber. The company photographer even got around back to snap a shot of the sawdust bin.

Did you say Wonderland Hotel ?

I am new to this forum & have enjoyed your logging layout. I am a self employed finish carpenter & cut my own scaled lumber from scrap poplar & cedar. My family & I camp at Elkmont camp grounds every fall. We were fortunate to see the WL hotel a few years back before they demoed it,what a shame. I have been surfing the web for info for this spectacular hotel to model myself. We have prevously dismanteled our HO layout for a much larger one. I have been scratch building a logging area myself & would like to incorporate this hotel. Any info you might have on the WL hotel would be appreciated.Thanks for the spectacular photos.

Hi Sawdust,
Yes, it is That WONDERLAND Hotel that I am currently modeling. Neat to see their are others with that obsession!!!
I have been to Elkmont many times myself. My wife and I stayed at the Wonderland Hotel after hiking to Mt LeConte lodge in years past. It was a neat old wooden structure wih a huge porch and great food in an old wooden dining room.
My first information site was the great museum of the Little River RR in Townsend Tennessee. You may have already seen their website at www.littleriverrailroad.org .
I am posting a couple of pictures of the lineside baggage station,including the Little River 2-4-4-2, that is literally at the present day access to the Elkmont camp ground.
In years past I have printed pictures of the hotel from the Blount County website and from Google searches for the Wonderland Hotel.
Now for the lazy part. After building a foam core mock up of the Wonderland I decided to look for a kit that closely resembled the actual Hotel. I found the Bar Mills Craftsman kit to be a close representation of the hotel and bought it. I love these kits as they are a lot of fun and have many jokes and humor in their instruction papers. So that's the route I am taking on constructing the Wonderland. Good luck on your endeavors!!!!

just out of curiosity,is that transfer crane the same one that life-like makes? i had a really old one that i thought about doing the same thing but thought it was unsaveable so i threw it away.guess i was proven wrong, yours looks great!--josh

I believe you are correct.
A model RR buddy here in Clarksville Tennessee has the model of #148 that he runs on his logging empire. He brought it to run on my layout a while back and took this grab photo with the flash on his camera.

Hi Josh,
Yes, that is a Life-Like model.......it was cheap 9my kind of project!!!). I enjoyed weathering it and painting it. This is actually a small area on the layout and a tall structure like this makes the area look bigger by forcing your eyes to look up.

The Tourists are Coming!!!!

Hi,
My model C&S RR loosely models the real Little River RR in East Tennessee. Part of the fun and charm of this logging outfit was the "outing trains" it supported. These were special excursions that connected with the Southern RR in Townsend Tennessee and the cars were put behind Little River Locomotives that hauled them up in to the splendor of the Smokies and stopped at Hotels such as the Wonderland (see previous posts). It was a nice polished touch to an otherwise rough and tumble logging outfit and every body had a good time.
Pictured here are the steel bridges over the Big South Fork River that support the interchange between the the C&S RR and The Southern RR just outside Caseyville Tennessee. Caseyville like Townsend is the jumping off point for the tourists trip up in to the mountains. What a thrill to ride behind a real steam-spittin shay!!!

Well the company photographer made it to Caseyville, the "C" in the C&S RR herald. It sure is hot. Even the whoosh of the fast Southern freight going through town bound for Asheville NC does little to move the oppressive air.
We see two different work ethics at play here as Unka Dave's painting crew busily slaps paint on Aunt Peg's old frame house. Yet, we spy Mr Bubba feeling that "Its way too hot to work.....and maybe I should see if Doc Tom could write me a work 'scuse to get off the job a while. Least til it cools down a piece."
While the company photographer is just waiting for the freight to past so he can cool down after a hard day chasing trains at his favorite watering hole just on the other side of the tracks.

Its "Train Time" in Caseyville

The C&S RR interchanges with the mighty SOUTHERN RR here in Caseyville Tennessee.
When the Southern runs it is "train time" in this sleepy little town in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee. No longer the slow pace of geared logging locomotives but rather highballing fast freights and passenger trains speeding between Chattanooga and Asheville. Occasionally one will stop to drop some freight cars or some tourists. But not today.
Our photographer has to quickly get off the tracks after snapping his photos and automobile traffic is tied up briefly until the speed demon is gone.
Included is a shot from the bluffs over town of beautiful downtown Caseyville Tennessee and its main Hwy. 76.
