Forney Bash To Saddle Tank

Hi all :thumb::thumb:

My Forney would'nt play nicely on the very tight radius on my mining
layout, infact it refused to stay on the track at the best of times. wall1

So it was sent back to Baldwin with instructions to turn it into a decent
Mining Loco.

After some serious chop chop surgery in the Baldwin Shops it was returned
to Sludge Pit Minerals as an 040 Saddle Tank. :twisted::twisted:

:thumb:Wow. That is a very nice looking locomotive. I am impressed!!! I would like to do the same in the future for my Haiti Sugar Hauler.

The forney is a sweet runner and in a short wheel base form like yours is a fantastic adaptation!!!

Hi Guys, thanks for the positive comments. :thumb::thumb:

I'm actually in the middle of building a motorized Tender for this Loco
due to some very cruel grades on the layout up towards the top Tunnel.

I have loaded the Loco Saddle Tank with steel balls set in epoxy to add
plenty of weight but the wheels still slip when pulling a train.

I think the Bachmann Wheels are made of some kind of slippery steel.
Has anyone else noticed this

The Tender is not finished yet but runs very nicely.
Had to slow it down with a diode bank to match the Loco speed.

I'll post more Piccies when it's finished.

The tender looks great and will add a tremendous amount of "pull power".

A product "Bullfrog Snot" http://www.bullfrogsnot.com/ has been discussed as the answer to slipping wheels by local modelers. While it has a gross name it might actually work. While much talked about in our own "bull" sessions I have never seen said snot applied to any local yokel's engines.

Thanks for the link. Have'nt seen that before. Sounds interesting.
Here in OZ we have Cane Toads which are a declared Pest.
Maybe we could boil them down into a messy goo and see if it works
the same as Bullfrog Snot. sign1

Seriously though, the motorized tender does the trick with the steep grades.
I have installed some steel weights into it as well.
Makes the Loco look meaner too.

Wonder if those Cane Frogs eat sugar cane..........would lead to some very sticky BF snot????

I do like the motorized tender idea though. I "double head" the Porters on my mini layout to pull a long string of cane cars. A little extra umppphhhh probably helps on these little layouts with tight curves and extreme grades.

A buddy of mine has that forney. its terrible stock in the curves, totally unsuited for tight radius.

Tender looks superb! Is the stone work scratchbuild or is it from New england brownstone?

Yeah the Forney is a nice looking Loco but not very well behaved.

Bit hard to get any New England Brownstone here in OZ.
The Stone work is scratch built, carved a master in plaster, made a
Latex mould and cast slabs as needed. :thumb:

Doc Tom the cane toads were intorduced to control the cane beatle which eats the sugar cane, unfortunatly no-one bothered to check to make sure the toads could reach the beatle on the higher reaches of the plant wall1wall1wall1wall1 so now we're stuck with two introduced pests
IIRC the beatle was introduced to control the prickly pear but took a liking to the sugar cane instead

So I guess that makes three :curse::curse::curse:wall1 pests

Whoaaa that is one ecological nightmare. Lots of critters love sugar including the two legged variety it seems.

Loco and Tender are all done. Tender is connected permanently
and wired in parallel to the Loco making it more or less a 0-4-4-0.
Very powerful and heavy. :mrgreen:

Yes it is quiet....I do not know why. It is a very good site and easy to load pictures to that's why I like using it.

I think there may have been some cumbersome ways of becoming a posting member a while back and some of the old posts talk about other problems.

I have never had any difficulties and things have worked pretty smoothly for me.

I encouraged a couple of my RR club buddies to join and there is a little more activity over on the Logging and Industrial RR sections. You may wish to post over there. You can see there my other sites about my defunct HO C&S RR, my G scale Little River RR and of course my ON30 Haiti Sugar Hauler. My buddy Bill Nelson also has posted considerably there as well about his logging outfit.

Since your RR is "industrial short line" please feel free to post there and I think you will get a little more feedback. Your modeling is very very good and we could learn some of your fine techniques.
