M113 style APC Build

Finally got around to starting the Patoroch version of the M113 APC inspired, counts as, Classic Rhino. Started it a few nights back and for the main hull started and modified with some supports and some openings I intend to put crew into. Not quite ready to do a super detailed interior or anything (yet), but certainly some torsos and heads manning the vehicle commander/gunner and rear hatches.

Everything in this sub-board is a wargaming miniature, specifically for Warhammer 40,000. Yes, this is a gothic science fiction version of an M113. So, to fit the setting, Eli takes the base vehicle (in this case an M113A1 or A2) and then adds some details that fit the 40K universe (lots of rivets, some re-interpreted exhaust pipes, 40K sci-fi weaponry, etc). I tend to love building his designs based on real world vehicles, as the first 40K vehicles when the game came out in the 80's were all conversions of historical vehicles in the 25-28mm figure scale (or about 1:48th in vehicle/aircraft scale modeling).

I have loved the M113 series since I got to drive one as a kid. My Dad taught USAF MPs SWAT and Ranger tactics. They had bring your kid to work days regularly and my brother and I got to handle a lot of hardware. I drove an M113 over a 4" diameter tree, and never slowed down.
Love the idea of using real machines to base sci fi vehicles off of.

Ah yes, now you come to mention it, I recall building a tank type thing which had the tracks exposed around the outside, similar to the first WW1 tanks.
My friend Colin Howard was commissioned to do some artwork for Citadel/Gamesworkshop and had some Space Marines (metal at the time) sent over and the model kit of the tank...

Road wheels for the track, the Sudsy way. Kept the inner and outer faces of the wheels, but laminated the hub with 3 layers of cereal box type card stock. Cut 4mm x 100mm strips of paper card, and gave each wheel half the wheel part (where the solid rubber would meet the steel tracks). Then another slightly smaller diameter cereal box cutout to get around a 1mm gap between road wheels, and then hemispherical beads as hubs.

Got the main body together, and have my vehicle commander and infantry roof hatch cavities setup. I plan on building inserts for open and buttoned up vehicles.

Camp Bullis, in the hills outside San Antonio had an M-113 set up with a turret mounting Puff the magic Dragon, and the interior of the APC was a 10,000 round magazine. That was a street sweeper. 2 minutes total time at 5,000 Rounds per minute.
We had some cool toys back in the mid to late 70's.

Happy Thanksgiving (turkey day in the USA)!

Used my holiday time off before the big feast to knock out the first insert, the troop hatch. It was exceedingly successful so far! Especially with how good it looks with a couple discounts inside.

Started greebles on the top and front. Good stopping point for now.
