Wow! Brings back boyhood memories!
Believe it or not, my moms side of the family homesteaded parts of this area way back when. We've actally found the old homestead!
Every summer from the time I was 'bout 10 till 18 or so, my family used to spend at least a couple weeks every year at Big Lake which is right up in this area. I have hiked, biked, and driven many miles of that old roadbed and am very familiar with most of it except for the portion down towards Maverick. In some of those photographs, I know exactly where they were taken and it gives me chills to see that area with an actual locomotive in it. There are no tracks in place anymore and I have always wondered about the kind of trains that traveled that road. Even now, I take my family up there every year (or at least we try) and I will never see that old abandoned roadbed the same way! While I have no pictures of the actual road bed (I'll change that next time we go up there), I do have some photos in the near vicinity that show what the country looks like when there is no snow! Of the two photos where I am posing with my little scooter, the old roadbed is behind me on the other side of the lake at the bottome of the tree line.
Thanks for the memories. That was great!
