I received word earlier this afternoon that the former New Haven RS-11, recently acquired by the Danbury Railway Museum, is on the move. The latest word is it is in the Atlanta area and being moved by CSX, on its way to Connecticut. I do not have information on its route or ETA at this time.

There are very few RS-11s in left in any kind of running condition. This one probably operated in the yard that is now part of the DRM for at least part of its career.

I don't know much of the history of this RS-11. I did manage to clip some brief info from another web site that will give you a brief history. After it arrives in Danbury I will learn more about it.

Here's what I found:

CRTS Update #02-146
Sunday, February 25th, 2001 at 11:00 EST

HISTORIC LOCOMOTIVE IN-TRANSIT ON CSXT:
The Danbury Railway Museum of Danbury, CT has acquired former New Haven Railroad Alco DL-701 (RS-11) 1402 from the Martin Marietta Corporation.

The locomotive was built in May 1956 as one of fourteen units for the New Haven Railroad that were numbered as 1400-1413 and assigned class DERS-5. The locomotive was then transferred to Penn Central and received
number 7662. The locomotive later became Conrail 7589 on April 1st, 1976. Upon retirement by Conrail, the locomotive was sold to broker/dealer George Silcott of Pittsburgh, PA. The locomotive ultimately went onto Martin Marietta Corporation. The locomotive is now enroute home to its former haunts. The locomotive is currently using
reporting mark DRMX 7589.
------------------------------------------

The RS-11 is enroute, but I don't know just where it is at this time. We thought it might arrive in Danbury as early as last Wednesday, but that didn't happen. I am sure the last snowstorm was a factor in causing the delay.

This is being written on Wednesday, so I hope that some progress has been made. However, I learned from a good friend at the DRM that the loco was still in Selkirk as of last Sunday. I also learned that it is to be restored as it was when the NH had it. I'm awaiting word as to which color scheme it had.

Unfortunately, I am not really familiar with what color schemes were used on what equipment and when. I hope someone else can provide us with the answer to your question. I am simply interested in having the DRM RS-11 painted however it was when in service originally.

The D&H RS-11 is STLL in SELKIRK YARD . it arrived there on the 3rd of March so it's been there for 12 days. Maybe something went wrong??? I HOPE NOT!
here is copy/paste from CSX RailTrace:

DRMX 7589 ARRIVE EMPTY Q41028 SELKIRK NY 0303 0345 CSXT

I would venture that the unit will be painted in the orange scheme as that was the popular motif of the day of delivery. However if it ever was black with red and white lettering, I'd vote for that!

George.

The RS-11 is Still in Selkirk, geez a broken airline sure takes a while to fix, doesn't it?

I guess CSX hasn't had an ALCo running on their tracks for a while (except the slug mates with the SD38's) so they decidie to try it out??? anyway, it is currently still in selkirk,NY

I reckon so, the darnded thing is still in selkrk, nearly a month now.

A lot of people are getting itchy waiting. Lets look on the bright side, however. CSX does plan to do the repair. I just hope the price to the DRM is right--$00.00. If it is, we should be grateful. The wait will be worth it.

Pierce:

I've posed this question elsewhere, but don't think I did so here. If I did, I apologise. Do you know what color scheme the 1402 will be painted in once it finally gets to Danbury? I'm interested because I want to have an authentic model of it, just as I do of 0673.

Actually, Dave, I may have asked you that same question somewhere, some time.

I have not heard anything that could even remotely be considered official as yet. Does anyone have any information about its "as delivered" paint scheme? This might be one choice for the repaint job.

Pierce and all:

I think I have answered our question. I just obtained a copy of THE authoritative book, New Haven Power by Swanberg. Lo and behold, on page 453 is a picture of none other than 1402 in black with red cab. The first paragraph on the preceding page says "The handsome new DERS-5's looked snappy indeed with their bright red cabs and handrails, black hoods, and large "NH" logos"
