I was visiting a game site this evening when I stumbled across a review for a program called Trainz. I'd never heard of it! Apparently, it is similar to MS Train Simulator, except that it is a model railroad simulator! From the screenshots and descriptions it looks pretty nice. No steam engines, though, but I think they're going to include some in a later service pack.

You can use the canned layouts or design your own layout--sculpt the land; put down grass, rocks and trees; put in buildings and roads; and, of course, lay the track. After you've got a place to drive a train, you hop in the cab and take off!

Also, I found this rather interesting program called Black 5 - Steam Locomotive Simulator. I downloaded the demo and did my best to run the locomotive. Does anyone know how to actually drive a steam locomotive? I couldn't keep the steam pressure up. I did manage to figure out how to go forward, reverse and stop, though! :)
