So I know a set of tracks goes through town, but how does one go about finding the nearest train yard?

Google maps too.. Just put your town name in the search engine.. Then click on satelite view and move the picture along the tracks till you find a yard.. Sometimes it takes a while, but you get to see trains in the yards and maybe one along the rails.. Really cool!!!
