Benchwork is completed and I've all the 2" foam subroadbed I need. Now I must decide whether or not to add a 1/4" layer of plywood or hardboard between the foam and the benchwork. I simply don't see the need for it and would prefer to skip it.

Yes - if I need to install something (turnout motors) underneath that must have a hard surface for solid attachment, then I can easily glue the proper size piece of hardboard in the right spot for that support. But other than that.... Opinions...

I would prefer having 2" foam over 1/4" plywood if someone was to accidentally put an elbow on it - rather have it dent than break clear through.
