Just wondering if anyone could comment on the history or "rationale" behind the traditional steam train engineers' garb, i.e. the black & white striped hats, overalls and red neckerchiefs. I suspect such colours and clothing were used because engineers worked in such smokey surroundings. The black & white scheme probably tried to obscure smoke & soot.
FYI, in Britain, the steam "engine drivers" dressed differently again -- black caps and blue/black outfits similar to what a mechanic might wear.
Thanks in advance!
Rob
