Well, it is known that the new SW movie features an "evil twin" of the charming rolling droid. And guess what happened: It's already been made of paper!

This is the place to go:

Instructions:

AI (for easy recolouring): https://goo.gl/wDvXTc

To maintain a consistent look here is the accompanying BB-8 from the same creator:

This one includes several different colours! :)
Go get it before it gets caught by the Resistance! :)

These are cool! I like the fact that he used a penny for the stabilizing weight. You could use a washer as well.

I like the Penny trick, too. I'm still wondering why I did not came up with that with my BB-8. Ah well, I wanted him to roll anyway! :)

A big ball bearing, mounted in cardboard sphere, you can get these at Micheal's Craft stores, the have a magnet glued inside on the card board that you halved, and mounted the bearing inside, then glued back in. Thee bearing would always hold A magnet, mounted on to bosses, pins, holes, whatever you make to allows the ball to spin in on direction. That magnet would be mounted to this post just under the skin. The head unit would similarly have a magnet in it. This would make for a model you could gently move and have the head follow on the surface, yet be detachable. The Big bearing would roll freely inside the cardboard sphere, the sphere, with strong enough magnets, would stay located to the head. This would be for positioning, not for playing with, though such a model could be done if two posts are used to hold the magnet on the cardboard sphere, and small axles are placed to allow the cardboard ball to spin on one axis. Much easier than it looks, for an avid modeler. Just a though. :)

Actualy, it didn't work for the movie and they came up with something else. With an electro-magnet, this would not be too hard to achieve, and with a decent budget, you could minimize C.G. A moveable ball with weighed two wheels inside is not something I think you would not should get a patent for. Hamsters have done this same theory for years. Not much of a patent in my eyes, but interesting virtual effect. We'll probably find out later than BB's head can come off and fly around independently, if they find that concept useful, or even a toilet in emergencies. ;)

We should keep one crazy off topic thread, but always have one thing that links to the topic, like is Barbara Eden (Bb.E.) drinking something in that bottle, or did she just come out of it.. (no pun intended). :)
