It's funny that you say that, they do sound really different. There is no "four chuffs" to each revolution of the drivers. It's constant, and there are six (three cylinders). Above walking speed, it does sound like it is going flat out.

They really punched it one time though as they were goign to hook up. A huge cloud of smoke belched out of the stack, and the clanking of the cylinders and associated gearing was quite loud as it flew down the track at at least 20mph... which is really flying for a Shay.

Here are the pictures...!

Here they are...

1) T&NV General Electric 50-ton switcher

2) Shay with the ex-CPR caboose at the "station". The official's car is behind the caboose.

3) The front of the Shay

4) Climb on board the caboose - complete, mostly authentic interior!

5) A view from the cupola.

And the last ones - a closer look at the workings of the Shay...

1) Detail of the cylinders

2) Backhead detail. The long grey bar across the bottom of the photo is the throttle, and the big dial in the middle is the boiler pressure (running at about 150psi). Out of sight (bleow the bottom of the picture) is the firebox, but there is not much to see, as this is an oil fired beastie... ;)

Hope you enjoyed the ride!

Could not have asked for a better day... OK, except two things:

1) Less humidity... ;)

2) More track for the Shay to run on. It only has a few hundred metres between the shop and the end of the line (all on Museum property). It would be fantastic to run her as a real excursion line through Gatineau Park or something like that.

Here are two happy passengers (my girls 1 and 3.5 yrs) in the T&NV Officials' Car.
