This has been a fun project so far. If you take your time with the track, you can get away with some pretty severe radius curves. Just stay away from anything 40'+ or anything with six wheeled trucks. The cost to build a small layout is very reasonable and the "bang for the buck" is there. If...

Well, the track is down. I am about 75% done with wiring the blocks. Next is the control panel. I've been doing a lot of filing to get the trains to run smoothly. I was not a fan of the Atlas track going in, but chose it for economic reasons. Here's a few pics... The overall layout...

The Atlas Shays are very nice, indeed. It has to be frustrating to deal with a wait like that. If you wanted undecorated, perhaps a quick shot of black from the airbrush on the tender might do the trick? I have the Crown Willamette Paper shay, but the "official" story is that it was purchased...

Thanks so much for the replies! They are atlas N gauge manual turnouts. I meant I switched the feeder wires around when I said polarity. That's exactly what I did, but probably explained it poorly! All was going well until I hit the second yard switch, which would not work with the feeders...

I plan to run three blocks: mainline, disston branch, lower yard. I have not measured that curve, but have previously laid test track to make sure it would work, which it did. BTW, I discovered that it worked better with the cheap atlas code 80 rail. Code 55 looks so much better, but I would...

I have purchased two Kalmbach wiring books and after attempting to read them find myself in a state of advanced flummoxment! Hope somebody can help before I turn my soldering iron on myself!!!! Goals: I want this project to be as simple as possible. That said, I need the mainline segregated...

Cool. I'm making a small layout too and it's good to see others doing the same. The expense is lower and the work is faster. The challenge is getting it to run smoothly. My new rule: Anything over 40 scale feet is history!!!!:thumb:
