Shock, horror - Sweethome Chicago goes modern

I thought I'd try something a bit different for a change and ran some modern stock on the layout. Being the lazy so-and-so that I am, I didn't bother changing the vehicles or advertising hoardings, instead choosing to use angles that minimised the incongruity. As usual, I took some photos...

Alcos in action - video clip

The Proto 1000 RS2 was somewhat easier to soundchip, as there is more room inside the shell. The project follows much the same steps as the Atlas version, except that the speaker - this time a 1" oval speaker sits on a small ledge cut into the chassis weight just behind where the cab fits...

Alcos in action - video clip

Here's how I fitted the decoders. The RS3 installation used a DSD101LC decoder and 1.5" oval speaker as the basis for the exercise. 1) I removed the rear weight and the portion of the hood that would sit in the cab, down to a level that was in-line with the bottom of the cab windows...

Alcos in action - video clip

I have been busy over the weekend installing three new Soundtraxx decoders into a couple of P1K RS2s and an Atlas RS3 (by far the harder one to do. Here's a link to the video footage on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uslTeRxNzoE I also have a request - a couple of the RS units...

Building an empty stock car train

Hi Bob, In Britain, cattle trucks were cleaned out after use, using a lime wash which created the white line effect over the lower portion of the car. In the 1930s, most railway companies switched over to cheap liquid chemical cleaners which did not leave the white stains. I'm guessing the...

Building an empty stock car train

I felt it was high time I started to build up some cars for an empty stock car train - well, after all, I am modelling Chicago. After rummaging through my stuff I managed to gather together a paultry 4 stock cars, a result of not having any stock pens on the layout. However, I like the...

C&NW F3s enter srvice at Sweethome Chicago

Thanks Roger. The American Layout is 24' x 18", giving me a grand total of 36 square feet. At the moment, a cassette storage yard is situated behind the layout, to get trains on and off the scenic part, but I intend to have a fiddle yard at either end of the layout to allow me some through...

C&NW F3s enter srvice at Sweethome Chicago

I finally managed to locate a second CNW F3 at a local show yesterday enabling me to make a matching A-A set. I soundchipped one of them and chipped the other with an NCE chip, after removing the Lenz chip that was already installed (didn't have speed tables and I was unable to match the...

    Soundchipping a brass steam switcher

It's a Baldwin 0-6-0 built for the AT&SF (#2100 class). (I'll edit in the Brass loco manufacturer later) Tsunami light steam decoder by Soundtraxx. I got mine from Litchfield Station in Arizona, although lots of web stores carry them. You also need an 8 ohm speaker to suit your available...

    Soundchipping a brass steam switcher

The next task was to wire up and fit the tender trucks. I used the least stiff wire I could and fed it through small holes in the tender base, leaving sufficient 'slop' to allow the trucks to turn. I then started fitting the basic decoder wires to the connections - I will wire up the lights...

    Experimenting with Windows Moviemaker

I've just been messing with some old video clips - making them older still, using Windows Moviemaker video effects. You can get carried away if you're not careful - it's addictive. http://www.railimages.com/gallery/album508/aaz Older http://www.railimages.com/gallery/album508/aba You Tube...

    Soundchipping a brass steam switcher

I made a start on soundchipping one of the 2 brass locos I picked up last weekend. This is the one I chose to begin with. Not only do I want to bang a Tsunami into it, I want to convert it from an oil tender to a coal version and lettering it for the Belt Railway of Chicago - I don't do things...

    Started some weathering this week

I finally plucked up the courage to do some weathering on my Kadee cars (and others) this week. These are early attempts and far from Mellow-Mike standards, but I'm learning. Here's one for Trainworm Jon

tender wheel pickups for Proto Heritage 0-8-0

Tom, the 4 wires from the wheel pickups were paired off and spliced to the red and black wires leading to the 8-pin socked. These were then covered using heat-shrink tubing - invaluable for all DCC electrics. NB make sure to attach paired off wires to the same side wire from the drivers...
