It has just occurred to me that the best way to have a tram / streetcar layout where you don't have to go to the time and trouble of rigging an overhead catenary system is to run early trams that were not powered by external electricity at all.
Things like steam, or soda, or compressed air or battery power were all used at one time or another......
Not having catenary makes it easier to gain access to the tracks and vehicles, as well.
