Thanks Lester! I posted about the control stand quite a while ago so I'll provide links to those threads. It was a fun project that was inspired by an old Model Railroader article about a guy who actually rebuilt an F unit cab (from real salvaged parts) in his basement and used the control stand to operate his trains. I decided to scale down the project considerably and after some searching on ebay (where I did actually see a control stand for sale..but it looked damaged) decided to build one out of readily available materials. The main part of the drum is a three foot pice of 12 inch stove pipe.

I haven't started building my new 6.5' x 10' layout yet, but here are some pictures of my three modules - a total of 2.5' x 12'.

Service facility on one end; passenger station at the other end; then along the length from the station end.

Very impressive. I like the fact that it has people, a lot of modelers leave out the people. Also like the cemetery. One question. Was the man laying on the station platform hit by the crashed baggage cart?

Ha! No, my 18-month old son thought it would be fun to climb on the furniture, reach over and play with the little people and vehicles. :cry: So sometime soon I have to go make some repairs. And move the couch further away from the layout!

Here is an update on my layout I posted earlier in this thread. I had to remove the shorter leg of my L-shaped layout and had to redesign the right side, but I think I like it even better, although it is smaller now.

I live in an apartment with a very understanding wife, two kids, a mother-in-law and three fishtanks. Needless to say, modeling is a challenge. All of my model work is done out of a cherry chest that doubles as my workstation. I've built a variety of accessories for it that nest into it including a worktop with slideout drawer, a test stand/cradle and nested boxes for paints and such.

I've also built stackable storage for my club run night bound trains. Each box holds up to 10 full length passenger cars and 5 freight cars or up to 30 freight cars alone. All 6 ride in a wheeled cradle that rolls under my N scale layout when not in use.

My inhouse layout was a 30" x 6' module in HO scale with an HOn30 loop on it. With the arrival of a 43" x 60" N scale layout, decisions had to be made and the module's fate was sealed when our club changed the portable layout's configuration. It rests quietly in storage for now. The wall racks were an incredible flea market find that allowed me to remove my HO collection that doesn't run regularly on the club layout from its nested storage in modified footlockers to a more prominate place where they can be better appreciated.

My newly reconfigured space allows for the N scale layout and my miriad HO projects. I now have space for all kits and models in progress to the right of the layout. On another wall nearby, my HO motor fleet rests quietly for the day when they will be allowed to roam the highways and byways of the future B&MC.

Bob sometimes I forget how lucky I am with my layout size and start to complain that it ia to small (which it is). I quess I should be excited that i can have what i do. I am very impressed by you guys in apartments who are active in the hobby. A few months ago Model Railroader magazine had an article on Chris White & his Russian RR. He is a friend of mine and the article did not do him justice he has a fantastic layout in an apartment bedroom. And is very well organized much like yourself. Me my layout is a mess all the time.

Lest you should think more highly of me than you should...my layout can get outta hand from time to time. I wish I could say that this was posed, thankfully, the reorganizing I did has kept me from a repeat.:thumb:

I concur with Lester-most of us that have some bigger space (mine is 15'X17' +/-) are always complaining about a need for more space and we have a mess everywhere! I admire you guys' with small spaces & great layouts!
