Walthers Terex Dump Truck

I've been working on the model from Walthers of the Terex (so they say) dump truck. I've got some photos to work from and trying to get the "toy model" to look more like the prototype. I'm not going for exact prototype as this will only be a part of the scenery in the free-mo module I'm building of a rock quarry and cement plant of some sort.

Here are the progress shots of what I've done so far. I have more details I'm going to add before I do any painting or weathering. I had planned on just painting and weathering the kit from Walthers but realized it wasn't "real" enough for me so here it is:

Nice job on the truck. The handrails look great. Did you change the nose piece to be proto? My 15 year old son & I do a lot of vehicle building in the
50's era. These add a lot to a layout especially when others want to know where you found that vehicle because they can't reconize it. Keep us posted.

I change the nose to be more like prototypical but not completely. I wanted the truck to be more then the kit like you said when someone sees it they'll know it's different. I just got done adding the mirrors and that was not fun but looks great.
I'll post more later.

Here is an update to what I've got done so far. I plan on a few more details and then it's time to paint it.

Here is a shot of the bottom side. You can see where the hydraulic hoses will connect. I have some product I found at Micheals Arts & Crafts store that will work great for the hydraulic hoses.

This one you can see the exhaust that will go behind the heat plat on the left side of the truck right in front of the dump. I had to extend the frame of the truck in order for the exhaust to fit between the front of the truck and the dump.
Also, you can see the hand rails I've added to the front. I'm not sure I like it to much now because the nose is to long and unrealistic.

Here you can see I added a little to the transmission to look like there is more on the underside.

Looking real good Dave. I don't know what your plans are for weathering that piece of art but I would sure have a hard time putting the dirt on that! wall1
 
Here is an update to the Terex Dump I've bashed. I got it white but I didn't like the way the white ended up chalky when it dried. I hope when I spry future on it for the decals that or the dullcoat will seal it.

I have some more details to completed and then it time to weather it.

Hey Dave. The white looks good. I really like the hoses, they add a lot to the detail. What kind of paint did you use & what method of spraying did you do. I know from experience the paint in cans other than for modeling like you get at the hardware stores comes out very think & some will eat the plastic some. I did this to a styrene bridge & the gray primer I used from Home Depot ate the palstic but I was fortunate that it actually looked like pitted rust when I weathered it. I now try paints on something scrap before I do a model. Yours looks good I wouldn't worry about it by the time you weather it you'll never know it well you will but others won't :twisted:
 
Where can I source that Kit?

The extra handrails look really good, well done.

Cant wait to see the final pics.
 
Terex Dump update

Hey Railbuilderdhd, :wave: Have you finished your Terex Dump truck? The last I heard you were going to weather it. Give us an update if you get the chance.
 
Well, I got side tracked and have not done the weathering to the truck because the quarry project has not made any progress. I've just been thinking about getting back into the quarry project so this will be a part of that. I'll be sure to post what progress is made when I get back to it.

Thanks Dave Just wanted to know if you were still out there & if you weathered the Beut yet. My train days this time of year are slow as well. Check out my Log Truck on the last few pages of my Maple Valley Logging & Millwork Thread. It was part of that project so that's why I put it there.Keep us posted.
 
I'm here just been doing some gardening and my model time has drifted to some military models the past month. I've has some fun with that but I'm getting back into the train models so it will not be long before I'm back into the quarry project. I've been thinking about how I can get the free-mo module frame built and use some of the wood to build a table for my friends sons new train set. He's 8 and his father got a train set for him but wants me to help get it set up. Ok, I'm off track here. I'll keep you posted and will be posting some of my new rail cars I'm building and weathering now.
