Jan,

I try to print the group 5, but I have some problem with the layout of some pages. For example on the page 3, parts are too near the border of the page and my printer cut the piece 8 and 10. Is there a way to edit the pdf and move the different pieces more in the center of the page ?

Are you printing on A4 or Letter?

GIMP will open and allow you to edit pdfs (it won't save them, although you can save as a variety of other formats). Barring that you may need to save the pdf as an image file and edit that. The free version of Acrobat Reader won't do that for you, but several free .pdf viewers (I use PDF X-Change myself) will.

Thanks Tirick. Effectively, I can open the pdf with Gimp. But which resolution I choose to import the PDF ? By default Gimp say 100 dpi. Is it the good one ?

And I'm printing on A4.

Yes, but Jans's sugegstions will lead to a smaller model as he say just to scale it down a bit.

My printer is able to shift the complete page, so I just printed sheet 3 of group 5 (which had the "boarder problem" here, too) 2 times to get all the parts completely.

Jan, maybe you could make sure to have a printer margin of at least 3 mm on all sides of the sheets for upcoming groups? That way it should print out completely on most printers without being forced to scale it down.

Be careful:If Jan does this all those who already have printed with the "fit-to-page"-option on will have done this for nothing...
And to be honest: how much smaller will it really be?

I leave the final descision to Jan.

Finally I use the "fit-to-page" option I found with Acrobat Reader. I was asking a solution, because I was first using Foxit Reader where this option is not working as well as Acrobat Reader.

So now I will use Acrobat Reader :).

You assume of course, that the exact dimensions of all page contents will be the same for every page... unlikely at best. 'Fit to page' is not an exact ratio and you may find it better to select a specific ratio that is conservative, but consistent, ensuring all pieces are the same % size as the original images.

Just a suggestion. It'll be a while before I dare tackle this monster, but as I only have access to Letter sized cardstock I will have to reduce or re-lay out myself.

Uhm - no, those would not be harmed. The "fit to paper"-option scales the whole A4-sheet down to fit into the printer margins, no matter how much white room is on the edges. If 2 mm or 2 cm: It doesn`t matter.

You WILL have, of course, a problem if your printer get's a defect or so and you`re forced to switch to a new one: You will have no idea what the scalng ratio of your original was and will have to do a lot of try and error with a new one. Remember: It may take a while until the model is complete!

So a variant that will print on most printers without the need to be scaled would be the safer way.

That`s why I suggest to leave approx 3 mm on all edges free, that way it would print nice on many modern printers without to be scaled. Once again: If you use the "fit-to-page" option pages with such a layout will have the same ratio like the printed ones, so no problem for those fellows.

Meanwhile I was able to start my build of that wonderful papermodel - and yet I realized how HUGE this behemoth will really be once finished.

I hope my idea to make it in 3 or 4 seperate parts that will be mounted together with magnets (magnetic foil, to be exact) will work. Otherwise I'll neevr be able to get it out of my hobbyroom...

Jan, will you create a displaystand for it, too? You are the one who knows best which mounting points will withstand the stress and weight - with a selfmade stand I`ld always fear that the model will collapse one day.
 
Soooo... the first group (No. 2) is finished, and only three parts of group No. 5 have to be done.

I had a few problems today to figure out in which sequence the parts 8-12 should be glued together at best, but finally everything goes very well.

I hope to be able to keep this speed so that I`m always done when the new group goes online - that would be a good way to really finish that beast without getting overwhelmed by the sheer size. :cool:
