OOOhhhh, it's a Tenshodo- there must be a rubber connection between those two shafts protruding from the bogies and also the loco is actually brass.

These days Tenshodo make very good motors and- so far as I know- is quite a common practice in the US to replace Athearn motors with them or Sagami.
 
Okay, I remember a few months ago while I was still working at my LHS that I came across a few sets of those. But we had a F Unit and also the Shark Nose type. I think they might be Tenshodo or even Athearn.

All I know is that they're damn heavy!!!! We also had the streamliner coaches for the locos, but no one wanted to buy the stuff, hehe.

EDIT: When I think about it, it cannot be Tenshodo, because 1) They do Brass and 2) The metal is way too thick and of course, as you mensioned, it's a silvery metal. Must be Athearns then.

As you can probably tell it's an BLI SP AC4/5 Cab Forward,it has DCC,Sound and smoke or atleast I think it has smoke since it came with the smoke fluid.

This does belong here right?Not sure because it's SP steam and was not around when UP took over.

Very nice loco! But of course I was expecting a mighty Yellowstone from you. But that is one nice looking locomotive, (except is derailed in one pic) but whos paying atention right?:mrgreen:

I wish!But with the basic unpainted Akanes going for $500+ I just don't think they're worth it so I got this.I'll just have to wait until the kids are grown and then maybe I could get a real nice brass model of it.Or,I can wait until a manufacturer comes to their senses and decides the world needs a good plastic model of the DM&IR or NP Yellowstone,but I'll probably be six feet under by then IF they ever do it at all:cry:.

Thanks Sarge and MadHatter!It runs very well also,but the forward truck likes to derail some so I'll have to adjust it I think.Maybe tighten it up a little?

Is there a spring between it and the frame, if not, see if you could rig a pen spring in there. I do not run many steam engines, one to be specific, the 2-10-2, the first 2 does the same thing as yours, that is what I have been told to do. Nice UP units everybody.:wave:

Not sure,but I don't think it has a spring.It does seem a bit loose though so it swings out of alignment very easily so we'll see what I can do about it.It should not have a problem on 28" curves.

The electronics seem to be a little quirky also,nothing major,but I'm going to get the QSI chip upgrade for it.I heard it does wonders for this engine.

Chris:wav: , WOW!, i really like your cab forward!!!:thumb::thumb::thumb: i too have one:mrgreen: , though mine is an AC12, the LAST of the cab forwards:winki: . mine was made by intermountain. i gotta ask, does both sets of your drivers "swivel"? or just the set closest to the tender?:confused:

Chris, don't know if you knew it, but I'm real big on finding info & facts on the train stuff i like:thumb: , if your the same, i have a DVD you MUST HAVE on the cab forwards:winki: , its by Pentrex, and believe me, it will be $35.00 WELL SPENT:thumb: if you get it. TONS of real footage, and pics, facts and history, like i said, if your a cab forward fan, ITS A MUST HAVE:mrgreen: . below is a pic of mine. you can get this DVD right off PENTREX website, or train shows, or some hobby shops carry it.

I'm basically a fan of big steam(Who isn't?),but I like the Cab Forward a lot.My favorite is the DM&IR Yellowstone of course,but no plastic version yet:rolleyes:.I am planning on getting another steamer,just not sure which one.I'm thinking a Blueline Big Boy,Genesis FEF or Challenger or an Rivarossi Allegheny.There's smaller steam I like also,the ATSF 2-10-2/4 or 4-8-4, and several others.

I Really like your AC-12 Deano:thumb:.

I really like the detail on those IM AC-12's,I was going to get one,but I read a lot of people had problems with them and how they ran.I heard the second batch are good,but I didn't want to take the chance of getting a dud.And yes,both sets of drivers swivel on mine.

Chris, BLI & Riverossi make OUTSTANDING engines:thumb: , but i have 2 Challengers and 1 Big Boy by Athearn, and they too are SLAP AWESOME:thumb::mrgreen: , the detailing i feel is way better then the Riverossi, and they run FANTASTIC:thumb: , DON'T count out Athearns big steam:winki: .

you are correct on the fact that the IM cab forwards have some problems:frowns: . mine runs fine, but is a little noisy:oops: , and getting the sound in sync with the wheels was a real pain:frowns: , took me over an hour of adjusting CV's to get it close enough to make me happy. another problem with them is they are built just like the real ones, ONLY 1 set of drivers, the set farthest from the cab swivels, this makes them VERY unforgiving on 22r, and 18r is impossible. on ALL the REAL articulated engines the set of drivers closest to the cab was stationary, ONLY the second set of drivers swiveled.

Athearns big steamers have BOTH sets of drivers swivel, and are VERY forgiving on 22r curves:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Josh, as i mentioned several times in this thread, ANY roads UP took over is OK to post in this thread:winki::toug: .
 
Nice cab forwards!!!!! Classic Trains magazine winter 2007 issue has a nice article (with lots of pics!!!!!) about the last trip #4274 made over Donner Pass in 1957.
 
Dang it Deano, why did you have to get me intregued with the patched Rio Grande SD40T-2:cry: The only thing holding me back from eventualy getting one of those was the fact it couldn't handle 18' curves. Now Athearn's gone and made one that CAN handle my curves, although it doesn't look real when it does, but I don't care about looks right now. Ugh, I swear my brain's going to explode from the fact I'm going steam engine hunting tomorow and this.:-P Oh, and to keep the pics going, here's my CNW RS-32 #4242 (called an RS-36 in some of Deano's REALLY old posts:p)
