Union pacific is looking for someone to run one of thier Arkansas locomotive facility. I saw it in the paper this morning then got online to look it up.

The Northfolk Southern and CSX is always hiring here in East Tennessee. I know alot of people that has worked for both railroads and don't last. I wonder why?

Yea, I wouldn't mind everything except watching over 70 people and office work. I'm more of the "hand's on" type of guy. I bet that position makes at least $100k a year or better.

The job sucks. Long hours, lots of travel, and no time at home. You will eat, sleep, breathe, and dream railroad for the rest of your life -- or at least until you get enough senority to find a regular job. The money is great and the benefits are great but if you need to have a life then it's probably not for you.

Advice to any railfan contemplating a railroad career: Working for the railroad is the best way to make sure you no longer like it.

Brian,While I agree with your assessments of the job I love the work..Good pay,benefits,cab rides,caboose rides (back then) and the joy joy feeling that comes with working in all four seasons-well maybe not winter..I do not know of any place where the wind will cut you into like a yard on a bitter cold night

Miles, I DON'T OWN A PAINT COMPANYsign1 , but THANKS for the promotion!!!:thumb: i was a paint & bodyman(full time painter, did bodywork, when we were slow)from 1982-2000:thumb: , for the last six years i have been a "working foreman" at a company that makes tanker trailers for semi's:thumb: . I AM the ONLY painter, and air-brakes specialist there, hence, thats what i do . i have 6 guys under me in my department(axle room). but i would rather be in the position you thought i was in:thumb:. **AS far as the UP job goes, if i wasn't a single parent(my son lives with me full time), i would try for the UP job. though after living in Florida from 1983-2000 and dealing with all the hurricane...stuff, i SWORE once i moved back home to WI, i would NEVER go farther south then Chicago...EVER AGAIN! -Deano
