Find myself on the way to Regina, Saskatchewan for a new job the first week of Novemeber. Is there anything train-related to see and do there?

There may be tracks there, but VIA doesn't go there, and you can't even fly there directly. I have to go Ottawa - Toronto - Calgary - Regina. Calgary is about 1 hour too far.... Coming home, I have to go Regina - Winnipeg - Toronto - Ottawa. I think there should be a law limiting the number of transfers on what would normally be a four hour flight. With all the waiting, arriving early, etc, etc, it is going to take the better part of a day to get there...!
Anyway, any ideas...!? Anyone?

Hmm, how far is Moose Jaw from Regina? There's a Western Development Museum - History of Transportation there with a nice railway display....
Regina is one of those places "You can't get to from here". Its in the middle of Saskatchewan prairie (nowhere)
. I grew up in Weyburn (70 miles SE) and in the 40's and 50's there was a lot of steam action, passenger and freight. Last I was there (about 5 years ago), not much of anything in the way of railroad action.:sleeping: Borringg! Regina in November, huh? You'll love winter on the prairies. Cold, windy, drifting snow. That's why I now live in (sometimes) Sunny Southern California.

That is what VIA wants you to do...! And it is only a temporary thing (Nov 1 - 4) the new job is still in Ottawa, just a different building. Thanks for your concern though!

Good! Its only temporary. Winter in Saskatchewan is not nice! Have a safe trip. The first time (about 1970 something) I flew into Regina the airport didn't have a taxiway. The plane taxied down the runway, did a 180 and took off. Things have improved a lot since then!

Well nothing beats Pangnirtung in Nunavut (Northwest Territories - Baffin Island). The runway has no taxiway, and it goes right through the middle of town! I was there in 1986...
The original town was built on the water, and the airport was built above. Then the town expanded. So the quickest way to get from the new to the old is to walk across the runway. Don't worry though - there's a warning light on the shed (I mean "the terminal"
) that flashes when there is a plane approaching. Then you look before you cross the runway...Oh yeah, the best thing... the runway ends at the cemetery!

Regina aint so bad.
Well I live in Regina and I love it here. I'm from Vancouver where you rust with all the rain, and I like the definite weather change here and lack of liquid weather for about 6 months of the year. I love the snow and I do my little boogity dance when the first flakes fly. Regina is more like a small town than a city. Rush hour only lasts 20 minutes. My old friends said I would miss the mountains and the sea, but I don't. Out here we got oceans of weat and mountains of sky.
Moose Jaw is a swell place too. It is 60 K west of here. The road goes straight as a die to MJ, but watch out! There are 2 bends in the road where it crosses the tracks at Belle Plain. But don't worry. The curves are marked by warning signs as is every curve on the Highway out here.
Here in Regina on Saskatchewan Drive down town is the old Train Station that now has a casino in it. They spent 20 million on restoring the old building and now they give tours. You might want to check this out. A nice old engine sits in front too with an old passenger car turned into a restaurant.
CP has a huge yard here. This is there main terminal for sorting all the cars and modular loads and there is some impressive equipment there. All fenced off, but you can see quite a bit looking through the fence.
CN has a small yard about half a mile from my house. A lazy place where no one pays you much mind. I have been there taking pix a few times and no one said a word to me. At the far end of the CN yard is the location of the Regina Model Railroad clubhouse. They meet every Monday night, so if your here on a Monday, you can check out there new layout they are building. I haven't seen it since last spring so it should be operational by now.
Then there is me. If your interested we could get together for coffee and a chat. PM me if you would like to. :thumb:

I knew that sooner or later, if I badmouthed Regina enough, someone from there HAD to appear.
I have to agree, Regina IS a nice little town. It was the only place there was to shop when we lived in Weyburn. At the time, it had a large Eaton's and a Hudson's Bay Co. It was always nice to walk around the parliament buildings and look at the flowers in the spring, but I sure don't remember a lot of railroad activity there. In Weyburn, we had a couple of CP passenger trains every day that came (I think) from Moose Jaw with a 4-6-2 in the lead. Then there was the daily freight with grain cars for the elevators that usually spent a couple of hours switching cars, especially in the fall when the grain was harvested. I'm sorry, I didn't know there was any RR activity in Regina at all in recent years. I don't retract what I said about the winters, though.
