There was a topic at another forum yesterday about what model railroaders take with them when they travel...
This was kind of timely, since I'm getting ready to leave tomorrow for a week of R&R...
I take my little 4-tier toolbox, & a plastic container that can hold one or several projects.
I'm not sure how much time I'll spend modeling, but if the need arrises, I'll be able to get into something!:)

Charlie I guess your traveling by car since this seems very unlikely to be something you could take on a plane. I found myself traveling last week and with some free time and sorry I didn't bring something along to "play" with. Took the free time to find a couple of new hobby shops, found one real good N scale specialist in Hampton NH. Neal's has alot of in store inventory and was very cordial fellow I think he was the original owner but sold or gave the business to his son who was not there at the time. What is your destination? Any railroading in the plans? Most important HAVE FUN!!!!!

Yeah, you're right about the air travel.
Most of the traveling I do, business or pleasure, is by car.
I'm going to TN next week to visit family, & just relax.
 
Good thinking Charlie. Last Christmas we flew to BC to spend the holidays with my son and his family. I took a plastic container like yours and a few tools. Packed them in a suitcase and the airline accepted it fine. Seems where you could expect trouble is if you tried to take tools or stuff into the cabin with you.
Going by car sure makes it simpler. More room for the completed or working on stuff.
 
Charlie... my wife (bless Her ) looked sideways at me when my box of goodies was packed into the car. She thinks I must be the only one who takes his modeling on holiday........Now I have proof that I am not the only Inmate of this thing called model Railroading. ( came home with the shells of two cereal box buildings, which I am now completeing, the stone chimney house being one of them
 
My box is set up to do runs on other layouts or build on the road. I used a 3 drawer "Stack-on" toolbox and built the tray out of 1x3 ripped in half and 1/4" luan plywood. The locos and rolling stock are held in place by a stiff 3/8" foam, cut 1 1/4" x 3" then tucked fore and aft of each piece. Got it's first hard brake test today (whew :eek: ) and passed, with some room for improvement, namely, packing them so that they don't slide.
