Merry Christmas! :) I know this is too complicated to be turned into a paper card model, but if anyone would like to have the 3D model of it, I offer it freely.

I just finished my Phase 3 build of this new ship in Cinema 4D. I've exported it as a .OBJ and a .C4D file for free for anyone interested in it. If anyone here would like to take it and extrapolate the front, back, side, top and bottom views from their own 3D program, feel free to. I was trying to build it as a simple 3D model to be converted to a card model at first, but I got carried away with the details. I'll begin my phase 4 and 5 of the model soon, this will be the cockpit interior, landing gear, and extra details and finally, textures.

The wings are animated too, but only for those who have Cinema 4D.

Very, very cool - waiting for a paper model..........- merry Christmas to all.
By the way: Fans of Star Trek are "Trekies" what are Fans of Star Wars "Warsies?"

haha, cool! Well, I hope someone can use the dimensions and all and see if they can create simpler shapes from it for a paper card model, if so, I'd build it in a heart beat. I just got crazy with the details. I was all set to release it freely, then someone had given me an image of the back of the thing and I had to revamp it. Obviously it isn't 100% accurate, but like you said, with the very limited photos of the thing, I think I got it fairly close. It was hard as heck to figure out how the wings operated, some of it is just pure imagination on my part.

I just noticed something... Can it be that the wings fold up / down differently? I may be wrong but I think they split in the middle, the engines remain in one piece... However, please do not change your model because it reflects superbly the MCQuarrie X-Wing. :)

Not according to the teaser trailer:

They split along the horizontal like the older X-Wings, but they also split along the vertical.

I took a screenshot and increased the contrast as well as removed any color so I could see how they split.

Someone had created this help, though in reality, the top wedge-like box goes along with the top engine.

Also, the new X-Wing is based off of Ralph McQuarrie's art, but with the added vertical split to the wing.

Just remember, that there are no fan blades in the engines. The engines, according to official Star Wars tech. are fusion engines, not air breathing engines.

Even the older X-Wing engines - they weren't air breathing inlets, as a fusion engine don't need to breath air like our traditional air compression-to-thrust jet engines do.

No problem! I'll tell you it took me a while to figure out how it split, and then I tried it and it worked well. Then I saw the Shapeways models to confirm my ideas, and then I saw that blog. Personally, I love the next generation X-Wing - it still retains the X-Wing, still retains the nose section except it's a tad shorter. It still retains the droid socket, and though you don't see an R2 unit in the "Force for Change" video with JJ Abrams standing next to the full size X-Wing:

The wings splitting are nonsensical, and the engine splitting is just nonsense, in the "Star Trek" tradition!! Looks neat, but there is a reason Bi planes or X wing shaped aircraft aren't made, and wings in space are useless, except for mounting weapons too. Your Render is excellent. It would be easy to make a model from it. You did not over complicate it, which shows your prowess at you understanding of CAD. I personally wish they did the split wing tips. Oh well, it should be lots of fun anyways. Thanks for the Renders. There are so many of these ships made out of paper, I can't justify making another. :)

It's really about what looks cool, that's all it is, just pure artistic fantasy. But that's what makes Star Wars cool. That's why it's more fantasy than sci-fi like Star Trek is. There doesn't need to be really any rhyme or reason. Star Wars is a willful suspension of disbelief. In reality, there's no reason to split the wings like that and put lasers on wingtips far apart from the craft's center (that's a giant gap of fire), but that's obviously not what Star Wars is about. It just looks COOL! hehe
