Small shelf plan required

Finally out of the chaos of living with 3 pack rats i've secured a small space for a layout,its not much just 9 inch wide by 6ft long so its going to be more like a moving diorama.Scale will be HO,era will be late steam early diesel (50"s)
My engines are 2 RDC units so i'll need a station and an SW8 switcher (like the Avatar) so i'll need a small factory or yard.Any one got any ideas on a plan?or sources of inspiration?

I remember when i moved into this house 20yrs ago and built a 4ftx16ft N scale layout but slowly but surely the junk edged me out and after some frustration finally gave up and gave all my N scale stuff away.

I'm discovering that working on a layout this size is a lot more thought provoking than working on a large layout.On past large layouts i just put down the track and then put in scenery,buildings and sidings etc where ever they fit.on this shelf layout you have to make sure your buildings and scenery items will fit before you lay the track.
