Simple Colonial Viper (based on the geocities.jppapertoy_box/sirius replicas)

A friend has introduced his (15 year old) son to (TOS) Battlestar Galactica. My friend's son really likes the Colonial Viper. The boy also is interested in paper/cardstock model building (even though, he has never built a model of any kind). I had shown both of them the models that I have built (especially the Colonial Viper). My friend asked if there is a simple template of the Viper that I would recommend for a beginner builder. I know that geocities.jppapertoy_box made a very simple template (and Sirius Replicas repainted it).
I have both models and decided that the texture needed a serious upgrade. With the help of @Revell-Fan, I repainted (and retextured) the template. I also added a few parts to make it look a little more "realistic", but still keep the template simple and easy to build.
Once I am finished building this model, I plan to make an instruction sheet for this new template and uploading it to the RESOURCE SECTION.

*NOTE* For this build, I have printed this template twice (Each 8x11 (letter size) page has a parts sheet printed twice on it), so that I have extra parts, just in case I make a mistake. No, I am not greebling this build.
This purpose of this build thread is to introduce the template and show what all I have done to change it.

Here are the parts sheets.


I start with the engine mounting block. I have added a supports former to be placed in the center.


I attach the support pieces to the skin.


The engine mounting block is assembled.








I assemble the fuselage.




This is the box that connects the fuselage and engine mounting clock together.


I assemble the box (but do not close it up yet).

I attached the box to the fuselage.




I attached the engine mounting block to the box.

Moving to the engines. Here are the parts for the engines. I have laminated the fan plates and exhaust plates to 2mm thick; and the fan spindles and inner exhaust rings to 0.5mm.


Attach the fan spindle to the fan plate.


Form the intake cowling and intake ring.


Attached the intake cowl to the intake ring.


Attached the intake fan to the intake ring.


Formed the engine skin and inner exhaust ring.


Attached the inner exhaust ring to the inside of the exhaust.


Slid the exhaust plate into place.




Slide the intake assembly into place.


The engine is now complete


All three engines are now complete.
*NOTE* Each engine is numbered.


The numbers on the engines correspond with the numbers on the engine mounting block.


Engine #1 is attached in place.


Engine #2 is attached in place.


Engine #3 is attached in place.

The tail is assembled.




The tail is attached.


Here are the parts for the laser pulsar gun.


The laser pulsar gun is assembled.


Both laser pulsar guns are assembled.


Here is the part for the wing.


The wing is assembled.


Both wings are assembled.


The laser pulsar guns are attached to the wings.


The wings are attached in place. This model is now finished. I will be focusing on the updated instructions for the new template.

Great build! Fast and effective. The revised texture really adds to it. Up to now I did not realize that the back of the fin is angled toward the front.

Could you elaborate more on what you mean by "a slightly "3D" look - concave or convex"? Especially since it is fully three dimensional. Now with that being said, if you are referring to greebling; yes it has a great deal of greebling potential. All you have to do is print out additional templates and cut out the components that you wish to use for greebling and go from there. Why I did not initially do this in the beginning is that I want to keep the actual basic construction as simple as possible for those who are beginners and wish to have a nice looking model, that they can later rebuild and learn how to implement new building skills and techniques without the worry or frustration of attempting to learn how to build a more complex model template from the beginning.
