Reason to photograph outside

I was just looking through the NMRA site, and found this:

The authenticity added by natural light really makes you look twice (or three or four times... ).

I've got three words for this.

Shadows, shadows, shadows.

I used a slide projector to create the shadows on my diorama for the Layout Party, which did a good job of simulating old Sol. I wouldn't use it to light my layout, but for a staged shot of a model that is stuck to the layout, or if the weather outside stinks, this is a real easy fix.

Yeah, pretty much you're modeling the Sun. One seriously intense light source. But as you say, it's not good for regular lighting of a layout. Though I'm sure some people have come up with some clever ways of making "dioramas" within their layout which have independant light sources.

It is possible to get good results indoors too if you have a good lighting setup. These shots were taken at our club layout with just overhead flourescent lighting.
