Questions about drive

Anybody got any idea what kind of loco drive this is?

It had what looked like an Atlas RSC body on it when I got it. The frame has 'Made in Japan' on it, the trucks are from China and the motor is from Austria. Does any company make something like this or is it a kit-bash from someones junk box? I got it in the mail. No indication who sent it, no return address, just a note that said I hope you have as much fun with this as I did. This drive is what I'm using in my GP35/S6.

It looks like it could be a Roco drive. Atlas used to import Roco stuff and repackage it as Atlas. Especially with the geeps

I don't think it's roco. The truck deisgns look different, and I think roco drives had one fywheel. The roco drives I am familiar with used the truck sideframe to hold the truck together and the wheels in place.

I think diburning is close - an Austrian motor would almost certainly be made for Atlas by Roco, the chassis could be Kato and the trucks from Life-like? I've got a CNJ ALCo C420/424 with an Austrian motor (not, however, a Roco one) and chassis, and a chassis for something or other that resembles yours.

The biggest question is: does it run reasonably well, or is it just a show pony?

It runs smooth as silk and outpulled an Athearn F7 in a tug-o-war.

I know that. This is my GP35/S6. It's modified for running on lightweight rail.

Did the shell look like this?

If so, then it was a Stewart Baldwin AS-616. They used various sources for their chassis. Their first RS-3's were based on a modified Athearn drive. Their later F units had Kato drives, but I don't know what they used for the Baldwins (or the ones with hair, for that matter! ).

Here's your side view. The body didn't look like that. It looked more like the MDC version but with the walkway attached. The MDC shell has a separate walkway.
