They're made by American Z Line, you can view all there models on www.ztrack.com They have an awesome selection!
All engines are made out of brass. I payed $550 USD for each SD45
Around July AZL wants to produce SD70's with a plastic cover to reduce costs. Those will cost around $250 USD.

I'm planning to get a lot more but they're very expensive for me. It's going to take ages before I would have my collection complete.
To bad there are not many brands to chose from. Micro Trains is going to release gp40's in Z-Scale. American Z Lines and Micro Trains are the only ones who make modern engines in Z-Scale.
Hopefully there will be more companies making Z-Scale engines in the future. I can only imagine if someone like Kato would be making american engines in Z-Scale

They did, but I don't really like there product line, apart from the american steam engines. I'm simply not that fond of F7's
Cars cost around $20 to $30 usd. The one in the picture is a double stack wagon from http://www.fr-model.de/ I had to build it myself and payed $20 usd for the kit. It is out of production

I sure seen some beautiful layouts I try to keep mine very small though. Most of the money goes into the rolling stock I don't think the scenery is much more expensive then with a regular N-Scale layout.

I still have to plan a coal area at the bottom right module.
The top edge of the modules is 360cm long. At some places it's 40cm deep. I like to keep it as compact as possible.
I'm not sure which briefcase layout you mean but you might mean this one from Jeffrey MacHan:
I met him personally when he brought his modules to a trainshow in the Netherlands, he's a great guy

You mean the brief cases in the pictures above? I don't have the slightest clue to be honest, you could be able to make something like that with $3000? I might be way off...
