Interesting wheel alternative

The GPM kit wheels gave me a little concern at first. I'm used to the old laminating several circular layers and rounding the bit after. The Gpms wheels come as 2 discs for each wheel, then a series of strips wrapped around the discs, each strip thinner than the last giving the impression of a tapered, rounded fit. Right, I thought. But then I remembered some techniques learned here, particularly how to round and burnish paper to give it some unusual curve using a rubber putty like eraser. The results are better than I first thought. Pic 1 is the raw parts, pic 2 shows the rubber and a knitting needle tool used to burnish the rim, pic 3 shows the basic wheel cylinder, pic 4 shows one finished wheel, I used the knitting needle pressed to the outer edge to give it some soft curve, then ran a watercolor pencil across the Tread pattern to highlight the details. In plastic kit talk this is the equivalent of dry brushing to bring out surface detail. The 5th pic shows a further modification. I deeply scored the outermost strip to give the impression of treads. I included a pic of the plain center strip, on the left and the scored one on the right, they came out better than ist thought, now on the the landing gear.....

Something to land on.

The landing gear was pretty staight forward, a series of tubes, angled bits and folded bits build up pretty easily. Some of the parts are small, but the drawings are fairly detailed to show you what goes where.

And 2 more

2 last pics of the wheels and forward landing gear, I ran out of batteries on the camera showing the main gear, but the effect is very similar.

Ted,

I have to agree that the wheels look pretty good. Like you I had reservations on this type of wheel construction but I think you just put them to rest. I have to give this a try now that I see how well it looks. Thanks!

Phinished Phabulous Phantom

Well guys and gals it has been a relatively long road for this guy with a short attention span and an even longer time for me to have completed a model but here she is the F4B. The wing tanks were left off, I kept the large centerline tank. The tanks needed a lot of fit adjustment, after building 3 of them each seemigly more mal fit than the other I just kept the centerone. I'll do a complete "walkaround" tomorrow, for now though "HHHHEEEEEEERRRRRS PHANNY!!!!"

Last of the walkarounds

Dustin, thanks, this was one of my favorite aircraft. Here are some of the pics from the "underside". The first series is an overload of the rear landing gear and well parts...

Post Build critique

Having finished the GPM kit in general is a good one. The fit problems were overall minor, but there was a few design "flaws" I could've done without. The launch troughs for the Sparrow missiles were the worst, I think in retrospect, another way to approch them would've been to place the toughs in the frame/bulkhead parts 1st then wrap the skins around them, kinda sandwhiching them in. Throw away the missiles, design your own, scrounge some from either the Halinski or a someone elses. I'll release the Aim9B to the parts bin but the sparrow will go to DeWaynes site. The landing gear was better formed from thinner paper and reinforced from within. The exhaust nozzles are tricky but do-able and look better than just printed on markings. Redraw the tail hook, the fuel dump pipe at the rear of the rudder fin, and fiddle with the fuel tanks to get them to fit. The wheels came out much better than I hoped, and I'll use these in the future for other aircraft wheels. The canopy is a weak point for the aircraft, I'll have to make a bigger box to form the glass in one shot. Also there is no "bulge" in the fwd section, the profile is disappontingly flat. One last gripe and this is for all designers, commercial and wouldbe, I hate making parts from templates, or from scratch. If it is to be placed on the kit include it, this is mountings, connecting strips, laminating parts etc. Now on to another project, for the Airdales in the group...........
