Deano, I agree with you on Digitrax non-sound decoders. I had several of them over the years, but I won’t use then anymore. The MRC is a Brilliance decoder, but nothing I did, resulted in acceptable performance – even resetting to factory defaults does not help. After all I read about these decoders and the sound equipped Athearn engines, it looks to me as if MRC has some problems with their quality control. I am glad that you only got the good stuff from them. :wave::wave:
 
Geez, Deano, you got some really nice bar-goons at that train show. :thumb::thumb: That big Lincoln ragtop looks great, and the RS-1 has always been one of my favourites. Is that tender from Bachmann?

Don't sell yourself short, Dean. We're both doing what we enjoy, and your work need not take a backseat to anyone. In fact, in my opinion, no one who does their best should feel that their work doesn't "measure up": this is not a contest - if it were, I wouldn't be here. I see so much great work on this Forum that it would be impossible to comment on it all. I hope that I can learn something from the things that I see, and that others, perhaps, can learn too from the things that I offer.

I finally got some pics of my Hudson on the WPF thread.:thumb:

I was working on a certain E-6 last night, but the decals were so old they fell apart. I sprayed some fixative on them to hopefully fix them.

UP RS-1...
Well, i am at a stand still on it now:frowns: , i didn't realize i was out of hoses and coupler cut bars:oops: , no biggie though, i needed to order a couple sound decoders so i added the parts needed to my list, should have them all from Walther's by Friday:thumb: .

i had a little discrepancy with the "slogans" on this engine:eeki::oops: , really it would have said "road of the streamliners" on one side, and "serves all the west" on the other:winki: , but since i am out of those decals:oops: , i opted to put on a slogan that was popular during the era i am modeling:winki::119: .

PIC #2 & #3- the RS-1 AFTER is was "Deano-ized"...yes, thats a word:rolleyes: , i just brought life to it:toug::119: .

Lemme get this straight: you bought this loco today, then re-lettered and weathered it, while simultaneously making several Posts to this and other threads, and have now posted both the "before" and "after" photos!!:eek::eek: Deano, you are a madman!! I'm embarrassed by my tortoise-like progress on my own projects. To top it all off, you've done an excellent job, too!! :thumb::thumb:

Thanks Deano, I put a lot of work into the hudson between researching how the pipeing should be and designing the decals. I used up several sheets of paper trying to print them out so they would work on the black paint. Good thing I got three kits on clearance at wolly world for $2 each:mrgreen:

What are the letters in front of 1412? I have started to make my own hoses, I don't know how well you can tell in this pic. It looks like I need to straighten them out some.

hi Deano---outstanding job on the rs-1,especially the weathering.Like Doctor Wayne,I also am an rs-1 fan.Although the CNR did not have any of these diesels on their roster,it's subsidiary Grand Trunk Western had a couple in the classic green and yellow paint scheme---boy, would i like to get a set of those---thanks again for this great thread---nutbar

Wayne, you don't know the half of it......Deano was also helping me over-come a slight technical difficulty in the weathering on my new VO1000. I don't think there is anyone who goes to greater lengths to help and encourage other modelers than Deano........and he is the fastest detailer in the West........or East for that matter:thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

i bought the engine Saturday at the Lena show, spent all night finding pics of all UP's RS types, so i had an idea of how to do this project:winki: . it took me about 6 hours to get as far as i have:thumb: , i figure about two more hours to put a sound decoder in it,hoses and coupler cut bars:winki::mrgreen: .

Sarge, those engines you did look SLAP AWESOME!!!:bravo:
the letters i put before the number 1214 are: D.S., D.S. means= "Diesel Switcher", UP put those letters on many of the early Diesels of that type(FM's, etc. too):winki: .

Deano, your RS-1 looks fantastic. I don’t think 6 hours is such a long time to make it look like that. Hey, it takes much longer for UP to get their engines that dirty :mrgreen::mrgreen:.

Sarge, the paint scheme of your SDs is really stunning – great job.:thumb:

Steve, I love that engine. I am only glad that I got my new VO-1000 today, so that I don’t have to envy you :p:mrgreen:. If Deano does not mind, I will show a pic of it here once it is finished.

Well Gus, first of all, Thank you:thumb:. I wish I could shed a little light on this engine but sadly I know next to nothing besides the fact that it was built in 1942:oops:. When it came time to put the details on it (stacks and horn) I could not find a picture. I did find a pic of NP VO1000 # 420 that was built a few years later. It had four stacks, so that is what I did. Of course as luck would have it, I finally found a pic of #402 and.......it only had one stack:eek:!

I have found a loop-hole however, It seems that these engines often had their stacks reconfigured after some years of use (many to 4 stacks)........so, on MY railroad, that's what happened. It is an added bonus that it looks better with 4 stacks........IMHO:winker:

Well...I'm not usually that much interested with the family history of diesels...:mrgreen: But that one is an unusual looking one, and Deano is giving all of us an education on the genealogy of UP's and WSOR's many and varied engines...:thumb:

Steve, i too looked up my VO1000, and it too had just one stack, so thats what i put on it:winki: ...it doesn't look as good as yours or Kurt's, the extra stacks really make a difference:thumb::thumb::mrgreen: .

your exactly right Roger:thumb: . UPY is really the new D.S.:winki: . keep in mind though, both the old and new D.S. & UPY engines weren't just designated to yard duty, they ran/run locals too:winki: . and take UP's FM H15-44's for example, they had D.S. placed before their number, yet those engines ran over the road service too:winki: . but for the most part, D.S. and UPY engines ran/run yard & local duties.
