Sure they can. Find a bridge, get underneath it, stick camera (mounted to stick) up between the ties and film. When the train passes twist the stick 180 degrees.
The give-away is the guardrail.
That was my first guess. That or a maintenance access. Probably just reached up aftarwards and panned the camera.
yea definately under a bridge, a person can not fit between the rail and a guardrail like that. also you can tell there was noone there because you would have seen hs legs or something when he turned it....and that camera was turned pretty calmly and smoothly, way too calm for a person lying under a train, it would have been shaking like crazy.
DAMN!! Why didn't "I" ever think of that!! LOL Yes - - Pooka is correct - the first thing I noticed when the camera panned was "NO LEGS" 
There area few places around here where I could do this easily... Why won't I???

and c: It would be my dumb luck to lose the camera to the train somehow... then all I'd have is a pile of plastic & Glass where my Camera used to be

more stuff i will never tell my son about....he would do it too....LOL! honestly,i would just set the cam there and leave it till the train came! i would have had a heart attack under there!--josh
It was obviously done on a bridge or trestle. A small digital camcorder on a monopod would have worked well. I would hope the person was using a cheaper model. Wouldn't want to see a 1200 dollar camcorder go bye bye.

Much as it is very neat to watch, that has to be one of (if not the) most stupid things anyone can do. And if there were legs visible in the camera before the train, they would not be there after the train.
Another thought, which occurred to me before I read the theories above (which are probably better) was that the camera was remote controlled. Anyway, as it said, Don't try it!
That was a Canada Via Rail train. I have a friend that works for the CN, and does bridge repair work. It would be easy for them to do underneath
as they are right under the rails while they are still in use.

The only thing I've done was put my camera on a sleeper and started recording before the train arrived, once it went by I went and fetched my camera again.
I agree, that was definately done under a bridge or something, as was stated before, no one can contort like that under a moving train, plus he was mighty close to those flanges.
