Hello,

I am a new member of this site and thus far I have seen some incredible talent.
It is amazing to me as I don't have the slightest idea how you even begin designing a paper model.

My self, I am a recently retired mechanical engineer having worked on small vehicles to trucks, road construction equipment, mining vehicles to tanks.
Of all the vehicles I have worked on, the tanks were the most fun and most interesting as I enjoyed every minute of it.
It was an interesting and at times frustrating career.
However I enjoyed it very much having met and made great friends along the way.

My hobbies are primarily model trains and age of sail ship building (paper and wood).
I've been working on a miniature schooner that will soon be inserted into bottle.

Along my journey to find interesting paper ship models has led me to many interesting sites - this being one of them.
I've found some great non ship models as well in this journey.
However I am a bit disappointed that there aren't many paper sailing ship models that look decent.
Hopefully my time here will allow me to learn a few things and improve upon my modeling abilities.

Respectfully,
Allegheny

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Thank you very much for joining the forum. You have found the right place to be and I am sure you will like it here.

Your ship looks awesome. May I suggest to start a thread on it in which you can describe your techniques and the previous build steps to prepare the model before it is inserted into the bottle. This would be a perfect opportunity to get in touch with all the ship builders here.

Have fun and enjoy! :)

Hello and welcome you to Zealot!

You have come to the right place for all things paper/cardstock, and to build and hone your skills. The members here are very helpful.
The ship looks GREAT! I would like to see more photos of it.

So, if you have any questions, comments, concerns, need help or advice. Please feel free to ask and we will do what we can to help you (or at least point you in the right direction).

When you start a new project, please post a build thread. Build threads are a great way of show off your work and skills. Not only that, but if you run into an issue with a model you can highlight the area that you are having problems with and we can offer you some suggestions on how to deal with them.

Once again, welcome aboard. I hope that you enjoy yourself here. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

One of my favorite past times is modeling ship hulls. I was an avid sailor for many years. Thnak you for posting an Introduction.

What kind of sailing ship are you looking for? I'm sure you're aware of anything from a "Sharpie" or "Clinker built" ship could amount to a couple of days to many months difference in the actual construction.

Welcome to Zealot.

The link below leads to a simple Sharpie model that could be made from paper or marine grade plywood. Just enlarge the picture, scale up to the size you need. You could add Gunwhales, and rubs rails as needed. When someone starts to add details that aren't otherwise in the kit, we call that "greebling'.

To everyone that has replied thus far,
Thank you for your kind words and warm welcome to this site.
It seems the folks here are having a lot of fun with their paper model builds!
Some of the designs/builds I've seen are simply incredible - the amount of artistic talent is simply amazing.

@zathros I am not involved with prototype builds.
I checked out the supplied link and found the discussion there very interesting and learned something new.
At this phase in my life, I am simply a model builder and I am interested in sailing ships as I find them to be the most challenging.
Since I do all sorts of modeling, I am open to learning new techniques and sources of information.
However, I found the 1:1 Daydream Sharpie build very interesting and wouldn't mind tackling that just as a lark to say I at least attempted it!
Your paper build looked great as it was very cleanly done and well made.

What I am looking for are paper models of sailing ships from the 1600's - mid 1800's.
I hope to use the hull models to speed up my ship in the bottle builds.

The current build is a waterline model of the schooner Ingomar. It is all scratch made from various woods and I've included several details into it that most likely won't be noticeable! I have a few things I need to do yet before the insertion into the bottle such as finishing the rattling's and adding a sliver of wood representing the hull just below the waterline.
Then it is off to the next project - resurrecting a 100 year old folk model sailing ship, originally form a museum, that had been sitting in someone's attic for 55+ years.

Here are a few links to models which might be of interest for you:

Late as usual, but I'll add my
