New On30 layout. Ideas please...

I didn't know whether this should go here or in logging, but Ho Hum...:D

I'm starting a new On30 layout as well as my new HO layout. I saw a photo on here of a great little layout, but I can't find the post, so credit goes to whoever put the picture of the 'Gumshoe' up.

It's a 6' x 1' switchback layout & all the details including the plans for my own version can be seen on it's website at http://www.budgetwebsiteservices.co.uk/home/On30/

What I don't have at the moment, (and this is where you guys come in) is the buildings. Unfortunately, in the UK the choice of O gauge buildings is somewhat very limited and almost non-existent. I have a store only 2 miles from me called 'Home of 'O' gauge' and they don't even stock any buildings. :confused: :cry:

Can anyone think of any buildings that would go with this layout?
 
Well building flats would be a starting point. The track plan looks neat but would be too narrow for full buildings IMHO. Take a look at what http://www.btsrr.com has to offer for building kits. You could use the buildings for fronts and the sides in other locations and get 2 or 3 flats from the kit. I've bought some of his buildings, and they are nice kits plus he is very customer sensitive. Also for forced perspective, you could use a couple of his S scale kits.

Feel free to come down to my club one friday evening - we have quite a few members wth On30 layouts (myself included) who would be more than willing to lend you a hand!
 
got my Consol from them (the UK guys that is) and was very impressed with their service.

As for where my club is - click on the word homepage in my signature, it will bring up the club`s homepage, but we are actually based in Crawley is West Sussex (I myself live in Welwyn)
 
Why not scratchbuild? Order some plastic stock from the Antics website (IE corrugated, strip, sheet, dowel, tube, halfround, etc.) and then start doing drawings of the kind of thing you want. Pick the features you like, bin the features you don't. Then once you've got a finalised design, get building!

It's pretty simple to do too. It needn't be any more complicated than kit building For instance laying 4mm by 0.5mm strips down side by side on a piece of sheet gives you reasonably good wooden planking, then if you use a blade to give you grain, you get a really nice look. Plain sheet sanded looks like poured concrete or cement rendering. Shingles/slates are easy enough to do by cutting thin sheet and gluing them where desired, overlapping each course of shingles.

I'm sure all of this is old hat, but I thought I'd bring it up anyway, just in case.

Well, presuming you're wanting to model a logging operation, I suppose you'll need some kind of sawing shed, a store building, some kind of tool shop, and somewhere for the sawmill employees to "take a break". Depending on your era you might also want a boiler.
