"N" scale Narrow Gauge Disneyworld Mk4 monorail

I'm working on a little something I had a gentleman named Jason make a 3d model mesh for..I hope to make a fully working "N" scale narrow gauge MK4 out of this little guy I had 3d printed...take a look, it even has the tiny door handles.. I spoke with Bob Gurr on this and it's spot on acccurate, he would know since he designed it. Any what does everyone think of it so far. I will still havve a little work to do on it before all is said and done, but I really like this little guy

So that's made out of cardstock? That's really neat. I love the monorails and up to date very few have attempted one. I have the larger version from Disney that only emerges from the closet once a year for Christmas. I look forward to seeing your progress.
 
Well since I obviously have no idea what you two are talking about, would you care to elaborate on what a 3d printer is? It sounds self explanatory but how's it work? What's one look like? &, I still don't have any idea as to what material that thing is made from.
 
I've never had the opportunity of using one but this is what I think I know: 3d printers are very neat little tools/toys that might be the future according to some. Think of it as a very crude form of replicator technology from Star Trek: ([...], tried to explain it myself, but it's early in the morning, so I'll just refer to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3d_printer )

In short: I want one. Modeling will be a breeze. Although it might also take something away from modeling too. But then, I bet people also complained that sectional and flex track opposed to hand-laid track took away much from the hobby.

well,
the 3d printing is done by a hr invision which for lack of a better description prints like a printer literally. The printer has a raised platform within it and the platform slowly sinks as the ABS type plastic is formed through jets in the machine. this photo-polymer is solidified by a quick burst of ultraviolet light. it builds in steps in the case of this machine, microns....build step is approx .00016 of an inch. with this resolution it'seasy to see this machine can do small things...as you can see with the little monorail build. Hope this helps answer the question a little better. Gonna do a MK1 as well as part of my monorail collection. I did the original patterns for the one released for the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland, a 1959 Mk1 monorail in "O" scale.....while I really wanted to both of these in "Z" scale, I'm setttling for "N" narrow gauge so I can have running gear to hopefully make both of these versions work.....Ohh and I'm totally open to ideas and tips and techniques for running gear .....

Indeed, so it seems. I wonder how well distributed 3d print shops are though. Do you know how expensive is a. getting someone to make a model and b. printing it at an acceptable resolution?
 
depends on the build volume as to expense....?You will see a Disneywolrd MK6 while here at Disney in December, this is a MK4, the fist monorail we ran here from 71-89...It's the sleek looking one :)

Wow, an overly-complicated-printer did THAT?!?!?! That thing looks like you molded it from pure plastic! I gotta get me one of them, maybe make something that would dirve someone like Deano crazy (problem is, I can't think of anything train related that WOULD do that!:eek:)

Putting together the clues, it sounds like you've probably got quite a few fancy resources compliments of Mr. Disney at your fingertips to help in the creation of these things. Is it possible for you to elaborate on what your position is and what that entails?
 
well besides being a model maker I'm a Disneyworld Castmember at the World Famous Jungle Cruise :) been a skip there for many years... I've met alot of influential people in my time there...

Cool!!!! There's a question I've always wondered about, though: are the Jungle Cruise boats on a guide rail?
 
i was doing a little looking around about these 3d printers just to see how obtainable they were well the lowest costing one is 5,000 and its made afordable for people but most seem to run between 10,000 and 30,000
