Model of The Month TWO!: Battlestar Galactica TOS Colonial Warrior Blaster 1:1

So, this is a little update on the muzzle. It will consist of transparent sheet with the detail parts glued on. The SketchUp renderings show how it is supposed to look in the end. If everything works you'll see the black backs of the glued on parts through the transparent areas which will make the whole muzzle appear completely black. When the trigger is pulled, the muzzle is lit from the inside and the light is shining through the transparent parts. This is the exact way the original prop was designed; the only difference is that they used a completely transparent muzzle and painted the detail parts black from the outside.

Hi, AL!

I've been a veery big BSG fan for almost 28 years now and have collected everything on the series and stars I could lay my hands on. Unfortunately there were very few sources available in good old Germany before the Internet became popular. The info on the blaster came mainly from the Colonial Warrior Tech Manual. Since the CWTM drawings were not symmetrical I decided to use all the photos I could get from the www and the series and to construct the blaster "by eye", so there is a little artistic freedom involved in this project. My goal is to come as close to the film used prop as possible.

However, I found out that there is no ultimate blaster; there are many variations featuring different trigger styles, backs, front areas, detail, colour, crispness and so on. Some appear to be recast from the original prop, some seem to be made of rubber, others are completely rebuilt according to the original prop and sold as resin model kits. Even in the series you see at least a half a dozen different blasters (some made of rubber, some with electrical cord on its end, some are missing detail like Red-Eye's blaster, some are completely black). The resin kits differ from each other, too. Some are very good and look almost better than the original gun, others don't. The main disadvantage of the common resin models is that the muzzle is completely made of non-transparent resin, so it is not possible to put a flashing light in there. I did take the dimensions from the resin kit though.

Just chalk it up to the manufacturers. I am sure that each one of the colonies had their own manufacturer and there for made their own variant of the blaster. It is kind of like the AR-15 (M-16). There are a few companies (like Colt, Bush Master,and Daewoo, and the list goes on) that make it and even though they are all compatible, each one is slightly different.

Here comes the muzzle. After two unsuccessful attempts I finally managed to assemble the plastic sheet parts. I was about to quit the sheet and build the muzzle of acrylic plastic (from CD jewel cases) because the parts wouldn't stick together. Then our fellow warrior Rhaven Blaack opened my eyes: I simply used the wrong glue. Thank you very much, RB! :curse:

You literally saved my day (and an essential part of the project)! :thumb:

BTW, the edges are intentional for three reasons: They serve as alignment marks for the greeblies, the greeblies can be glued onto a flat surface (no bending around round corners) and if you build the light & sound version the light from the LED is reflected by the edges which makes the whole muzzle flash. :rolleyes:

Well then, according to the principle "if I can build it, you can build it, too", I only have to test-build one last greeblie before I switch to the textured prototype. The pictures show the part in CG and unfolded (still unedited and without flaps). Yee-hah! :twisted::twisted::twisted:

Wow. That is looking very nice. How in heck do you score the plastic sheet, without cutting through it!!

*Talk about steady hands!*

Build is really looking sweet. I've just started trying to learn how to work 3d software to make my own stuff, I hope to figure it out one day.

But still, good work.

BTW, this blaster is looking really good. I am sure that any self respecting Colonial Warrior would love to have one at his/her side.

Try SketchUp (if you are familiar with vector graphics) or Metasequoia. Both are very easy to use and intuitive. Blender is for the (far more) advanced users.

I score it VEEERY gently with the sharp edge of my cutter. Then it can be bent like normal paper.

Now I do not know how good it is, but it is a "free pattern" none the less.

Im already aware of the first site. Some guy did offer them..then he up an vanished, without a trace. Never did post anything. Someone else has picked up the ball...and Im hopping SOON...they will come up with some pattern. *crossing fingers*:thumb:

Meanwhile, I will continue to drool at this fantastic project, and await a pattern, so I can warp my little fingers off!! And the RPF folks just came up with a helmet... Hmmmm.

I tried the helmet listed here, but I had issues trying to put some parts of it together. I wish it had numbers on the parts. Or photos showing it put together. I will have to give it another try soon.

To all fans: This thread is not dead! I and RB have joined forces to make the BSG fleet larger. The reason for this is that I received many queries concerning the New Cylon Base Star, Colonial One and Colonial Movers from the BSG ship pack I unfolded a year ago. Both projects were paused and I felt it was necessary to clean up my desk and finish them now. All builds are almost complete so that I may turn to this project again very soon. I hope you understand. Thank you very, very much. And stay tuned, it's worth the wait! RF
