Minimum size of access opening

Work is progressing on the layout design but the latest version needs an access port (infrequent I hope) in the center of the 8' x 8' "turnaround loop" area at end.

I was thinking about having a lake that drops down on a hinge. Is this a reasonable way to hide an access port? Are there better ways I should consider? How big should it be?

How big should it be? What size jacket do you wear...? ;)

A lake is a common access point, and can be made to drop down around the shoreline. But you'd be looking at a fairly big lake I would think - probably 18x30 at least to get in and be comfortable.

Is there any way you can change your design to avoid having an access "hole"? One option might be to have a space at the back of the layout that is always open, but hidden by buildings, landforms, or some other view block.
