Material around the perimeter of your layout?

I've seen layouts at train shows that have plexi-glass screwed in around the outside of their layout to protect it and you can see the foam layers. ops:

I've seen pictures of what looks like 1/8" composite material, usually brown, trimmed to match the height of the "ground" around the perimeter. What is this?

Masonite! Its a very common material for fascia boards on layouts. Its often used because its flexible enough to make curves to follow the line of the layout and also is easy to cut contours for scenary. Its available in 4 X 8 sheets and smaller.

Here's an old picture of how I used masonite on my layout. It can be painted to suit your layout.! :thumb:
