H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds has to be one of my favorite novels; can't count the number of times I've read it since age ten...
That being said, I've always wanted to make my own model of the Tripods from the book; be it Jeff Wayne's design (I've built many copies of Cut & Paste's model) or Spielberg's cuttlefish-like monstrosities. But, I decided to make my own design (partly out of hubris, but more due to the fact that I'm not good enough to do a model of Wayne's or Spielberg's designs)

I'm almost done with the model; just have instructions, a cover sheet, and the testbuild left to do. Might do a stand if I feel like it.

This was one of the first designs I was considering, which I promptly ditched for multiple reasons. May resurrect it if people like:

Anyway, that's all for now until Friday or some such other date in the near future. I'll try to post more progress pics if I get any more progress done
 
Stick some wires (Tig welding wire is cheap and perfect for such things). in the legs and it will stand on it's own. Very cool!! :)
 
I too like H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds. I have heard the original radio broadcast. I have to say that I understand why people back then went mad when they tuned into their local radio stations and heard it for the first time and thought that it was really happening.

I like the concept of this model. It looks like a very interesting design.
I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I've never actually read the book, I've heard the whole rebroadcast of the Orson Wells Radio play, the Musical adaptation is cool. as an aside my mother remembered the Halloween broadcast ... she used to tell us how everyone thought it was real news.

I only read about it when I was learning English... At that time (when I was in my English course), I've learned that people were listening to one radio show, and when they turned to the other one, about sci-fi, they missed the very beginning, when it was explained that it was just a dramatization. The rest of the mess you know.
I do not know if that was true,:confused: but there's a movie on Well's life that shows part of this episode, I think (this info should be verified :rolleyes:).
About using Inkscape for modeling, well, first of all: I love free software! :mrgreen: :thumb: Second, I wouldn't be able to do it. Not a chance. :cry: I need to rely on 3D programs to overcome all of my limitations, so RocketmanTan, you already have a huge merit in showing us how you do it. The radio show is included on the Spielberg "War of the Worlds" DVD package on a bonus CD. I had the opportunity to lend the set from my local library. I can understand that many people believed the events described to be true. Before the play was over, the Police stormed the office of the radio company and actually arrested some of those responsible (but they were in custody for only for a short time). Even Mr Welles himself was interrogated. However, this incident didn't harm his career; he became more famous instead.

The radio broadcast is definitely a comical episode of the Depression Era. If you ask me, I think it was the progenitor of "found-footage" films such as Blair Witch, Cloverfield, or Paranormal Activity.

Man, I'm fond of those pseudo-documentaries! They're really something, 'cos the special effects crew must work hard to make they look like real, low-quality, everyday footage. Unfortunately, when they turn it into a franchise (Blair Witch 2 was terrible :cry:), they totally mess with it... :curse:

Ugh, don't even talk about BW 2....I couldn't finish it not because it was scary, but because it was so horrible!
 
That looks really good! The texture makes it look more futuristic and modern compared to the various TV and movie incarnations. If you add a few greeblies here and there it could have originated from "District 9" rather than "War of the Worlds".
