Hi all,
I am a 3d artist trying to learn how to make paper /card models, I have a Metasequoia 3d and Pepakura Designer license.
I also have licenses for a number of 3d software but mainly use Silo , 3DCoat,what I'm hoping for is some guidance in the use of Pepakura as I have never made any models outside of a virtual environment. :)

I'll be trying make card models from my 3d models such as this 1939 Morris

Welcome to the forum new2pep! Looking forward to seeing more of your designs!

You'll learn to use pepa very quickly, there are tons of tutorials here and over the web.

What I can let you in on is that doing 3D for papermodels is a little different from 3D for movies or games. The biggest difference is to make sure your parts don't overlap or intersect.

An important aspect to get used to is the ratio of detail vs buildability. The more detail your 3d model has, the more difficult it will be to unfold and build.
Relative to this is the size of the model, the bigger you want the end result, the more detail you can add.
For example, looking at the pic of your morris, you'll either have to make it a really big model, or you'll need to simplify it to make it say, 1:48 scale.
If you're going for a small scale, it'll be easier to remove small details like the door hinges, you can add them later in the textures.

I think if you wish to make an accurate model of this car, I would stay away from Pepakura, and us a another program, then due the graphics in PhotoShop. I am partial to Rhino 3D 4.0. I state this because of the reasons that Thunderchild, one of the best modelers and designers here, stated, his expertise allows him to overcome what most people stumble upon, like horrible graphics on their final MODELS. A car like that is going to attract a certain crowd. I think you would want a full interior.

If you do do it in Papakura, I would suggest doing it in a very small sectional manner, so you can get an accurate model. Thundercild would be the person to show you how, no doubt. His work speak for itself. :)
 
I have to be honest, I have never heard of that before, but for the price, I'd try it. I wish I had that file of yours. I'd be interested in seeing the best way of unfolding it. :)

Hi Zathros,
I don't mind putting the model up for you to try or I can send it to you perhaps.
 
The only problem this model would have are the fenders. There would have to be a compromise on the edges. If you put it up, I would be interested in taking a look. Of course, that means anyone could grab it.?
 
O.K., I was able to extract a wire frame then make a body and unroll it from the Metaseqoia model. This model could be made much smooth, but it would taker a lot of work. The limitations of Metaseqoia are what made the model come out but everything unfolds. If careful, this same model could be made smoother on the roof lines, but like I said, much work involved. It could be made into a really intense model this way though! There are some errant lines on the left in the unfolded parts as I just rushed through it, and forgot to delete them. :)

Thanks, I haven't decided what to do with this. I'd like to get New2Pep involved.. If not, it goes on the back burner but I do like M.G.'s, and I am actually restoring my a '73 MG Midget. I am slowly working on a paper model of it, when time allows.
