i just got a athearn genisis SD70i and i cant figure out how to get the top off of it to see which type of decoder i need, any one have one of these and can give me some tips, thanks

A Digitrax DH163AO, DH163D, or a basic DH123D should be the decoder you need anyone of these will work. As far as getting the shell off I am not sure, take a real close look at the parts diagram that came with the loco.
This should be what you're looking for:
Four tabs hold the shell to the walkway/frame; gently squeeze and rock the body off, but don't pull too hard as the wires for the lights are attached to the shell.
